Things to Do in Franklin

Immerse yourself in Middle Tennessee’s proud Southern heritage while exploring the vibrant culture and storied past of Franklin

Experience the city’s Civil War sites and learn about the numerous plantations that once dotted the heart of Dixie. As a neighbor to Nashville, you’ll soon realize that music is also in this city’s DNA with an array of concert halls and options for live music almost every night. Downtown Franklin boasts the title of “Great American Main Street” and offers the blended vibe of small-town charm and modern sophistication in a bustling suburb. You'll find that Franklin is a city that offers many delights.

1. Scroll Through History

If you’ve come to Tennessee in search of leisurely walks on tree-lined streets and admiration of architectural gems in historic districts, Franklin is the place for you. Lace up your walking shoes and stroll into the city's past to get spooked, inspired and entertained during Franklin On Foot. This 90-minute walking tour packs in 200 years of history through tales of bravery, business and battle. Guided and self-guided experiences are available, both leading you through Franklin's dramatic past filled with Civil War spies, bootleggers and haunted buildings. Stop by the Williamson County Visitor Center in downtown Franklin to pick up a map for a self-guided tour and inquire about guided tour schedules.

2. Main Street Icon of Entertainment

Experience a slice of Franklin's cultural life through the decades at the historic Franklin Theatre. Since opening in 1937, the theatre has been the heart and soul of downtown’s Main Street. The Heritage Foundation of Franklin and Williamson County revived the theater in 2010 after a 3-year renovation. Now boasting a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system, the Franklin Theatre still retains its historical allure, architecture and décor. Treat the family to a movie, enjoy an evening of laughter at a comedy show or watch a live stage production. It also hosts live music showcases and events, further solidifying itself as a Main Street icon. Check the schedule for movie times and special events.

3. Interactive Civil War History

You'll think you've stepped onto the set of Gone with the Wind at this majestic plantation, but the Lotz House Civil War Museum is the real deal. The 1864 Battle of Franklin, one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, took place just outside its doors when it was still a residence and also doubled as a hospital. The estate itself has several battle scars—make sure to inspect the spot where a cannonball went through the roof and see where bullets pierced its walls. You’ll learn the history of the Lotz House and family, plus revel in the heritage of its furnishings, art, antiques and military artifacts. If you have time, tour the adjacent Carter House and Carnton Plantation—both related to the Battle of Franklin.

4. Picnics with a Horse-Filled Past

Check out Harlinsdale Farm and unwind among its sprawling 200 acres. Established in 1933, it was home to the prize Tennessee Walking Horse stallion Midnight Sun and served as a horse breeding farm. Transformed into a city park, it's now a window into Tennessee Walking Horse history. Run or walk the soft 5K track for a close look at the grounds where the champion horse trained. Stretch out beneath the open skies and toss a line into the catch and release fish pond, or share a country picnic with family.

5. Above the Treetops and High in the Sky

Picture yourself soaring over the region's hollows, hills and ponds in a brightly colored hot air balloon. Sound perfect? If so, book a hot air balloon adventure to experience the thrill of floating through the skies. Middle Tennessee Hot Air Adventures is one of several companies offering sunrise and sunset rides. You can make it a romantic date, or fun-filled family adventure—the experience is suitable for children 5 and older. You'll drift over the treetops and soar as high as 2,000 feet into the sky, but don’t be too sad on your descent back to the ground. When your ride of a lifetime is over, most operators offer a traditional celebratory champagne toast.

6. The Brightest Stars in Nashville

Experience some of the biggest and most exciting events in Middle Tennessee at the Bridgestone Arena. Just 30 minutes to the north in downtown Nashville, the 20,000-seat arena is the epicenter of the region’s entertainment and sporting events. It's Nashville's top large-scale music venue, playing host to the brightest stars, such as Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran. The Predators, Nashville's National Hockey League team, provide high-energy action there, too. If you’re curious to see what happens behind the scenes, take the Bridgestone facility tour. You'll see the Zamboni Tunnel, Rehearsal Hall, Shooting Room, Players Hallway and more. It’s almost guaranteed something amazing will be going on at Bridgestone Arena while you’re staying in Franklin.
