3. Interactive Civil War History

You'll think you've stepped onto the set of Gone with the Wind at this majestic plantation, but the Lotz House Civil War Museum is the real deal. The 1864 Battle of Franklin, one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, took place just outside its doors when it was still a residence and also doubled as a hospital. The estate itself has several battle scars—make sure to inspect the spot where a cannonball went through the roof and see where bullets pierced its walls. You’ll learn the history of the Lotz House and family, plus revel in the heritage of its furnishings, art, antiques and military artifacts. If you have time, tour the adjacent Carter House and Carnton Plantation—both related to the Battle of Franklin.

4. Picnics with a Horse-Filled Past

Check out Harlinsdale Farm and unwind among its sprawling 200 acres. Established in 1933, it was home to the prize Tennessee Walking Horse stallion Midnight Sun and served as a horse breeding farm. Transformed into a city park, it's now a window into Tennessee Walking Horse history. Run or walk the soft 5K track for a close look at the grounds where the champion horse trained. Stretch out beneath the open skies and toss a line into the catch and release fish pond, or share a country picnic with family.
