From Rainy To Romantic In Seattle, Washington

Seattle may have an average of 149 rainy days a year, but that doesn't dampen the chance for romance at this top couple’s getaway destination

Cuddle under the raindrops

We’re not afraid of getting a little wet, so you won’t see too many umbrellas around town. And on those rarest of days when rain turns to snow? You’ll find us gathering in the streets in awe of this seldom-seen weather.

Take a date to a city park

There’s always something to celebrate in Seattle—chocolate, coffee, food trucks—you name it. Our waterfront festivals combine culture, food and scenic views, perfect for an afternoon date. The Canoe Journey offers one of the city’s most breathtaking experiences. This intertribal celebration includes more than 100 canoes paddling together through the Pacific Northwest.

Bond over your shared love of books at Seattle’s shop around the corner

It’s no wonder Seattle was recently designated as a UNESCO City of Literature. We love our independent bookshops. Elliott Bay Book Company, a local favorite in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, has been a Seattle classic since 1973. Year-round, a host of literary festivals draw bibliophiles for events ranging from author readings to writer workshops.

Share a sweet valentine treat, any day of the year

Seattle may be known for its coffee, but we also have a mighty sweet tooth. The city’s first cupcake bakery and cafe, Cupcake Royale, tops its treats with an irresistible buttercream frosting. Try the salted caramel—a decadent chocolate cupcake with sea salt caramel buttercream frosting. Their cafes (you can visit any one of Seattle’s six locations) are warm and cozy—perfect for coffee dates.

Get a bird’s-eye view of the most romantic sunset

You’ll find the largest observation wheel on the west coast at Seattle’s Pier 57. Ascend to the top—the wheel stands 175 feet tall—to take in prize views of Puget Sound, Mount Rainier and the city’s sparkling skyline. A local tip: Ride the wheel just as sunset kicks in for some amazing colors reflecting through the Olympic Peninsula.

Adventure together in the great outdoors

We make the most of a good weather day when we have it. To get out on the sound or one of the lakes and bays surrounding the city, a big selection of area outfitters offer affordable kayak rentals—complete with life jackets, paddles and even guided tours. Locals rent from Alki Kayak Tours when paddling Elliott Bay or from Mountain to Sound Outfitters when exploring Alki Beach.

Float along on a dreamy boat ride

Why drive when you can sail? Seattle’s water transit taxis and ferries offer great views and a good excuse to explore new areas. For a romantic day-trip voyage, take the San Juan Clipper to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. The sailing offers incredible views of wildlife and nature, and you’ll return to Seattle’s waterfront just in time for a panoramic city sunset.
