Visit the home and plantation of Sam Davis, one of the Confederates' best known spies. If you’re not a history buff, there’s more to this town than its past. Smyrna is also a great place for kids and food lovers. Take the tikes down to Walden Farm for seasonal activities or to a play put on by the Springhouse Theatre Company. Or head out to Depot Days, the city’s annual two-day festival celebrating local business, food and music in its revitalized Depot District.
Sam Davis—Confederate Hero
One of the most famed attractions in Smyrna is the Sam Davis Home and Plantation. Sam Davis was a spy for the Confederates, known as the “Boy Hero” and recipient of the Confederate Medal of Honor. In 1863, he was captured and hanged by the Union Army at the age of eighteen. Walk the lush grounds of his home on your own or take a guided tour, which includes the restored Davis home, the outbuildings and the film "Sam Davis: His Life, Legend and Legacy" in the on-site theater. Explore the museum, with even more Civil War artifacts on display. Be sure to check in at the visitor center when you arrive.
Walden's Old-Time Farm Fun
If you happen to be in town between mid-September and the end of October, check out Walden Farm. Kids get a real kick out of the hayrides, face painting and sand art play area. Ride the pumpkin train or visit the friendly farm animals. It’s not just for kids; parents too can indulge in pumpkin fudge, chocolate-dipped cheesecake or even some roasted pumpkin seeds. Burgers, hot dogs and other treats are available if you want something more substantial. Go to the Ole Country Store for your Walden Farm T-shirt or some Halloween decorations. Then stroll out to the pumpkin patch to find your own souvenir pumpkin. This is the place for old-time family fun—an entertaining afternoon fit for the season.
Children’s Theater and Local Flair
You and your little ones will both delight in a show by the Springhouse Theatre Company. Featuring child and adult actors, this community theater group holds around four shows per year, ranging from musicals to period dramas. Kids will love seeing actors their own age, and you’ll appreciate the quality of the company’s classic interpretations. Tickets are available online or at the theater. If you’re in town at the end of September, head to Depot Days, Smyrna’s annual celebration of local businesses. With over 90 vendors representing Middle Tennessee, Depot Days offers a little something for everyone. Come for the car show, wine tasting, live music or various kid-centric attractions. With every snack or drink you purchase, you’re supporting Smyrna’s economy.
Burgers, Milkshakes and Flaming Desserts
One of the most popular restaurants in Smyrna is the Polynesian themed Omni Hut. You'll find island-inspired treats such as bacon-wrapped pineapple chunks and teriyaki beef sticks. Fresh fish, chicken and beef all get the Polynesian spice treatment and are served with various rice and vegetable dishes. Don't forget to try the Volcano—crème de menthe or chocolate liqueur poured over vanilla ice cream. The dessert sits in its own seashell and is lit before being served. Karin's Kustards and Hamburgers is a local hangout serving old-time burgers, hot dogs and thick creamy shakes. You really can't go wrong with a place that serves Chunky Monkey—a banana split with fudge brownies, ice cream, chocolate sauce and lots of whipped cream.
