Things to Do in Chambersburg
Perpetually, savvy travelers have called Chambersburg one of the greatest cities in Pennsylvania
And it’s not just because of its scenic surroundings either—this magical little place has plenty of things to do and see, any time of the year. You’ll feel right at home among the super relaxed, innovation-friendly atmosphere of the town. Keep reading below to find out what to do once you get there.
The Old Jail Museum, Not Exactly Paradise
Franklin County is named after Benjamin Franklin. Chambersburg, one of the county's oldest settlements, is home to the Old Jail that was built in 1818. After surviving a Confederate attack during the Civil War and serving as a hiding place for slaves heading north on the Underground Railroad, it continued to house prisoners. You'll find shackles in the dungeons, used for the worst of the worst, still on display. Take a guided tour through the original building and the annex, and discover notes of prisoners left on cell walls—and even on old gallows. You'll also find a re-created prison doctor's office, complete with a pharmacy stocked with medications in their original containers.
Indoor and Outdoor Fun at Cluggy's
Check out Cluggy's Family Amusement Center to test your skill on an 18-hole mini-golf course, or head for the batting cages for some hardball or softball practice. Outdoor laser tag is another favorite attraction at here. Anyone 10 and older is welcome to race in one of the Indy Pacer go-karts. Go mini bowling—same game, just smaller balls and pins—or spend time in the arcades. Kids from three to 10 get a kick out of the Tunnels of Fun play area. If you've worked up an appetite, sample pizza, ice cream and more at the snack shack.
Explore Michaux State Forest
Get out and explore the piney woods of Michaux State Forest. A 17-mile drive from town, you'll get the chance to hike on part of the Appalachian Trail. Thirty-seven miles of this 2000-mile National Scenic Trail run through Michaux. Brought your mountain bikes? Take them to one of the trails, available for most skill levels. Designated trails are also available for ATV riders, summer and winter. Snowmobiles are welcome on roughly 132 miles of trails. If you've packed your skis, the cross-country trails of Michaux are waiting.
From Philly Cheese Steaks to Italian Delights
At Kenny's Drive-In, you'll find everything from Philly cheesesteaks to burgers and grilled cheese. Add to that the hand-dipped ice cream cones and banana splits, and you’ve officially traveled back to the 1950s. Step inside Cafe D'Italia and you'll think you're steps away from the canals of Venice. Hand-painted murals create the illusion, as does the antipasto and the calamari. Be sure and save room for the homemade cannoli and tiramisu. Molly's Restaurant and Carry Out serves hearty food, and lots of it! Walk in and you'll find an old-fashioned dining counter, complete with swivel stools. Try the Amish-style chicken and waffles. Two homemade waffles are stacked and covered with chicken and white gravy. It's pure comfort food.
