Modern urban spaces infused with a rich cultural backbone combine with more than 5,000 acres of natural areas—all providing a plethora of activities to keep you busy during your time in the city. Whether you’re traveling with family or friends, you won’t experience a dull moment in this North Carolina city.
Get Active Outdoors
A balmy summer day is an ideal time to visit Falls Lake State Recreation Area on the northern outskirts of Raleigh. Wriggle your toes in the sand on one of five beaches, or put your kayak or canoe in the water to explore its piney backwaters. Head for the Beaverdam access to mountain bike or hike along the Mountains-to-Sea State Trail as it slices through the park. There are also plenty of fun trips within a day's drive of Raleigh.
Visit a Museum
Nearly a dozen Raleigh museums provide air-conditioned comfort while you learn about art, history, science and more. The kids are sure to enjoy a fun-filled afternoon at the Marble Kids Museum, where you'll find play-based exhibits geared toward youngsters 10 and under. At the North Carolina Museum of Art, you can explore outdoor as well as indoor spaces to view sculptures, paintings and other media. The 164 acres has trails designed for hiking or biking as well as grassy lawns and secluded garden areas. The city is also home to the Southeast's largest natural history museum—the four-story globe outside the front entrance is the first clue this museum's out of the ordinary. Inside, you'll find four floors of hands-on exhibits and enough animals to fill a zoo.
BE VERY AMUSED
Take the kids to burn off some energy at a local water park or amusement center. Raleigh's Buffaloe Road Aquatic Center allows you to float on a lazy river, rocket down a three-story water slide or whirl around in a water vortex. You'll also find a zero-depth entry tot area and splishy-splashy water features like a water curtain and tumble buckets. If you'd rather stay on dry land, Frankie's Fun Park boasts the best miniature golf in the city along with go-carts, bumper boats and other amusement rides.
EAT UP!
Start your day with fresh homemade biscuits done the way you like them at the State Farmers Market Restaurant. You can get them any number of ways—grilled and accompanied by gravy, ham or other fresh, local ingredients. You'll also find full country breakfasts full of lip-smackin' fare like chicken-fried steak and gravy, grits, and streak-o-lean. Got your mouth set for some authentic Carolina barbecue? Get the whole hog cooked in a pit at The Pit Authentic Barbecue, or enjoy other Southern favorites such as fried chicken livers and Halifax County fish and chips.
