From festive holiday events to ice skating and—even sledding—there are plenty activities to take advantage of when you book a hotel in New York City during the winter.
Ice Skate at Rockefeller Center
Experience ice skating in the shadow of the city's skyscrapers at the Rink at Rockefeller Center. Twirl beneath the golden statue of Prometheus and the rink's towering Christmas tree to create memories of winter in New York that you’ll cherish for years to come. Expect long lines for general admission skating, but you can reserve VIP access so you don’t have to wait. You’ll also get access to the VIP igloo where you can enjoy hot chocolate, cookies and concierge service.
Ride a Sled on a Snowy Hill
Forget heading out of town to play in the snow—NYC’s parks transform into winter playgrounds when snow falls. Stay in Brooklyn and scream your way down the sledding hills at Fort Greene Park. The park’s four hills vary from novice-friendly to adrenaline junkie thriller. On heavy snow days, the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation sponsors special days at six city parks, where you can sip free hot chocolate, borrow a city sled to zip downhill or compete in snowman and snow angel contests.
Join the Fun
Get off the couch and immerse yourself in the excitement of New York’s wintertime events. If you love a parade, check out the Lunar New Year Parade in February or the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in March. You can also try snowshoeing, snowboarding, kicksledding or a host of other sports for free at the Winter Jam in Central Park in late January.
Shop and Snack
Snap up unique souvenirs at Brooklyn Flea’s indoor winter venue. Shop in indoor comfort beneath the soaring arches of the Williamsburgh Savings Bank Clock Tower. Seventy-five vendors purvey wares that include vintage items, folk furniture, antiques, art and other one-of-a-kind items.
Take a Dip
If you’re not quite brave enough to join in the Coney Island Polar Bear Club’s annual New Year’s Day swim, take heart. Treat yourself to a 90-minute immersion session at Aire's Ancient Baths New York in the Tribeca neighborhood. You’ll have full access to multiple pools during your time at Aire. Experience warm, cool and hot water, relax your muscles in the propeller jet pool or just relax in the saltwater flotation pool.
