But, this destination is more than simply a college town. Sure—there are great things to see and do at the university—but you'll also find a variety of other activities, from outdoor adventures to cool indie shops and great dining options.
Day at the Museums
For an inexpensive educational experience, visit one of the city's museums. Tucked away on the University of Maryland campus, the Art Gallery offers free admission. Peruse works of students and local artists, including more than 2,000 paintings, drawings, sculptures and photographs. Learn about local milestones in aviation for a small admission fee at the College Park Aviation Museum. Aircrafts on display include a reproduction of a 1910 Wright Brothers' "Model B" plane and a restored 1924 Berlin helicopter. Take a break to enjoy a picnic lunch on the museum’s outdoor balcony as you watch planes depart from the attached College Park Airport.
Sporting Nation
Show your Terrapin pride at the Xfinity Center, the university’s 17,000-plus arena, which hosts basketball games and gymnastic tournaments. Join 1,500 other volleyball and wrestling fans at the pavilion, which is attached to the arena. During football season, break out the hibachi and enjoy an afternoon of tailgating at the Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium, home turf to the university’s football team since 1950. The 54,000-seat stadium also hosts track and field competitions and the school’s successful men’s and women’s lacrosse teams.
The Great Outdoors
Kids will love the natural beauty of the 38-acre Lake Artemesia. Spend the afternoon fishing for trout from the pier or take a walk along the lake’s trail, pausing to view orioles and finches. Twice a month, the Prince George’s Audubon Society hosts guided birdwatching tours as well.
If you're a golfing family, bring your clubs and play a round at the University of Maryland Golf Course, an 18-hole championship course along the northwestern edge of campus. Get your game in shape at the practice facility, which includes a driving range with 40 hitting bays, three practice greens and two practice bunkers.
Dining Out
Start your morning at the family-owned Bagel Place, where fresh-baked goods are made from scratch. The restaurant’s extensive menu includes bagel sandwiches, espressos, soups and salads. Or grab a seat by the open kitchen at Marathon Deli and watch as chefs prepare your authentic Greek dish, including hearty gyros. For something a little different, check out one of the area's many pho restaurants, such as the revered Pho VN One, just 10 minutes north of College Park. There, you'll find an extensive menu, complete with beef, chicken and vegetarian options.
