Indianapolis Vacation Tips From Our Experts

Make Thursday your day for free admission

Several Indy attractions offer free admission on Thursdays. The Children's Museum of Indianapolis, one of the nation's top attractions and the most popular museum in the country, is free from 4 – 8 p.m. on Thursdays. Christmas Eve, Martin Luther King Jr. Day and El Dia de Los Ninos are free admission days as well. The Newfields Indianapolis Museum of Art in downtown is also free on Thursdays from 4 – 9 p.m.

Discover historic memorials and monuments

Inspired by fifth-century Greek architecture, the Indiana War Memorial is a dedication to the Indy soldiers who served in armed conflicts. Admission is free, and the memorial is open Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument pays tribute to soldiers of the Revolutionary and Spanish-American wars. It’s quite the site to behold (at only 15 feet shorter than the Statue of Liberty), and it’s free to visit. Finally, the Kennedy-King Memorial—also known as the Landmark for Peace—is another sobering piece of history that’s admission-free in Indianapolis.

Catch an outdoor concert (or two) for free!

The Philharmonic Orchestra of Indianapolis and Indy Parks present free outdoor concerts in June that include a mix of light classical, movie themes, operetta and more. All concerts begin at 7 p.m. and parking is free. Or, every Wednesday from June through mid-August at Indianapolis City Market, you can listen to Bluegrass, jazz, and pop music while noshing on free samples. And finally, from May through October, take a stroll through The Original Farmers’ Market all the fresh and local produce, meats, cheeses, flowers and honey you’d ever want. It’s perfect the perfect way to spend the day.

Satisfy your need for speed—on a budget

Zoom over to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum and Hall of Fame, located within the track of the historic Indy 500 Speedwa. With over 70 cars—some dating back to as early as the 1920’s—and a detailed history lesson, a day here is both educational and fun. Keep the kids busy during your visit with the Speedway Scavenger Hunt. Admission is just $10 for adults, $5 for kids and free for little ones 4 and under, so a visit here definitely won’t break the bank.
