Things to do in Chicago

 

The Art Institute of Chicago will put you face to face with paintings by iconic artists. The Tribune Tower shows you the world with just a walk around its outside walls. The kids will be mesmerized by the critters at the Lincoln Park Zoo and the Shedd Aquarium. Expect some “oooohs” and “aaaaahs” as they meet Sue, the 42-foot-long T. Rex skeleton at Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History. Add the beaches, parks and food, and how can you resist?

Lincoln Park Zoo—North of Downtown

People who live in the high-rise condos within sight of the Lincoln Park Zoo are greeted every morning by roars, monkey talk and bird chatter. It's quite the alarm clock. The zoo is north of the downtown core and is open year round. Stop by and check out the Regenstein African Journey exhibit, which features warthogs and small creatures indigenous to the continent. The Primate House and Sea Lion Pool are also popular. Admission is free but parking isn't, so consider using the Chicago Transit Authority's train and bus systems.

Downtown Art and Architecture

Head for the 34-story Tribune Tower and walk along the base of the building to find the pieces of famous structures from around the world that are embedded in the walls. Some are American, such as a chunk of the Alamo, but you'll also find a piece of the Great Wall of China and another from the Colosseum in Rome. Check out the Art Institute of Chicago, only a few blocks away and stroll the galleries where you'll find works by Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh and many, many more.

Fun Along the Waterfront

Check out the Navy Pier, site of the 1933 World's Fair. Ride the Ferris wheel, do some shopping or just simply relax in the Landshark Beer Garden. Travel south to the Field Museum to find Sue, the most complete T. Rex Skeleton ever found. The Shedd Aquarium is next door. Explore the Caribbean Reef exhibit, complete with sharks, colorful fish and sea turtles. Next is the Adler Planetarium, home to Mission Moon, featuring NASA's moon landing. South of the Adler is Northerly Island, one of Chicago's waterfront green spaces. Hike or bike the nature trails as you take in the city’s skyline.

Head for Murphy's Red Hots for that Chicago hot dog, steamed or char-broiled complete with your choice of toppings. It's perfect for a quick snack to grab while sightseeing or before heading off on a road trip. For that saucy, messy pizza, visit the Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Company. You'll need a fork, lots of napkins and possibly some help to eat your individual slice.
