Greenville, South Carolina

Considered the birthplace of Greenville and now a nature lover’s paradise, Falls Park on the Reedy is a 32-acre park of reclaimed land adjacent to downtown that’s stands as the centerpiece the historic West End.

It’s easy to see why Greenville is called the Emerald City (not to be confused with Seattle), as this gem of Upstate South Carolina is teeming with outdoor activities and plenty of things to do around its budding downtown area. Kids will love the multiple floors of hand-on learning at the Children’s Museum of the Upstate, while history buffs will appreciate 400 years of preserved history to explore at the Upcountry History Museum. And for trip to the stars, check out the Roper Mountain Science Center with its planetarium and observatory. If you’re looking for outdoor fun, head up to Paris Mountain State Park for some of the most scenic hikes in the Palmetto State. Next, take a trip down to Lake Conestee Nature Preserve for bird watching and strolls through the pristine, natural bogs. Or if you’d rather stay closer to town for your wildlife adventures, pay a visit to the small-but-mighty Greenville Zoo.

 

Vicksburg, Mississippi

Whether you’ve settled on this historic town for your next vacation destination, or you’re just passing through on an epic Mississippi River road trip, you’ll find there are plenty of things to do in Vicksburg loved by locals and out-of-towners alike. There’s lots of history to experience here—from the USS Cairo Museum (home of a restored circa-1861 gunboat), to the Old Warren County Court House Museum and the Vicksburg Battlefield Museum. To learn more about the cultural impact of the Mighty Mississippi on the region, pay a visit to the Lower Mississippi River Museum. Coca-Cola fans should check out the Biedenharn Coca-Cola Museum, where the famous soda was first bottled in 1894. And be sure to swing past the colorful Vicksburg riverfront murals on your way to Navy Circle for the best views of the iconic Old Vicksburg Bridges.

 

Nassau, the Bahamas

Our last vacation destination idea for 2021 takes you to the island country of the Bahamas and its capital city, Nassau. Start your tropical excursion by booking a room at the Comfort Suites hotel on Paradise Island, and then head over the bridge to the open-air Nassau Straw Market on the northern shore. Parliament Square, with its pink, colonial-era buildings, is just across the street. Nearby, you’ll find the Heritage Museum of the Bahamas, showcasing the island’s history through a collection of artifacts. There are several 18th-century stone forts scattered around the island, like Fort Fincastle, Montagu and Charlotte—each offering informative tours and spectacular sights. Families will love a day at the Ardastra Zoo (noted for its “marching” pink flamingos) and the neighboring Botanical Gardens. If you’re in the mood for some golf, head to the west side of the island and check out either the Blue Shark or Albany Golf Course. Or, step back in time and explore the ancient jungles and caverns at Primeval Forest National Park.
