Things to Do Near DFW Airport
Let’s face it—nobody ever goes to the airport expecting to have a great time—but you can
But Dallas is different. The Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is a stone’s throw from a handful of unique attractions—so if you find yourself with a little ex-tra time before your flight leaves, you can bet that finding things to do near the Dal-las airport won’t be a problem.
Hit the Links
When the birds sing in the trees and the sun shines down on the fairway, it’s hard to believe that Bear Creek Golf Club is less than 10 minutes from the fourth-largest airport in America. Designed by renowned golf course architect Ted Robinson, this 18-hole championship course is open seven days a week, sunrise to sunset, and you can even book your tee time online. Plus, if you start feeling a bit hungry during your game, the Restaurant at Bear Creek serves up some top-notch omelets and charbroiled burgers.
Stroll Through the Botanical Gardens
The Grapevine Botanical Gardens are a hidden gem in the city of Grapevine, less than five miles from DFW Airport. Stroll down the winding footpath among more than 250 different species of plants, check out the viewing pond stocked with fish, and be sure to explore the butterfly sanctuary. The gardens are also within walking distance of Grapevine’s historic Main Street, where you can sample some local wines at Wine Fusion Winery or indulge your sweet tooth at Main Street Bistro & Bakery (316 S. Main St., Grapevine).
Go Roller Skating
Throwback ’80s vibes make SkateTown a fun spot to skate your blues away. With daily public skating sessions and lessons for all ages, anybody can tie on a set of wheels and zoom around the rink. SkateTown is less than 10 minutes from DFW, and you’ll also find quite a few top-notch dining options nearby, such as the tasty Mexican dishes at Taqueria El Campeon (2709 Mustang Dr., Grapevine) just a few blocks away.
Ride a Vintage Train
The Wild West is never far away in the Dallas area, and one of the most thrilling things to do near DFW airport is riding the rails aboard a historic locomotive on the Grapevine Vintage Railroad. Round-trip rides from Grapevine to the Fort Worth Stockyards take place most weekends throughout the year, and other rides are available seasonally. The Christmas Wine Train in December will definitely add some good cheer to your holiday season, and Great Train Robberies—during which the train is stopped by bandits on horseback mid-route—makes any layover or stay near the airport a little more thrilling.
