Know Before You Go: About Ashland
Ashland is the sort of town that's best enjoyed at a slower pace
Take your time, enjoy the company of your friends and family, and don't worry—there's plenty to see and do. Nestled in Hanover County, where the flat coastal plain meets the hillier Piedmont region, Ashland is a cozy town with easy access to all the amenities of nearby Richmond, minus all the noise and commotion. Escape to this Virginia city to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, and enjoy a slower pace, while still having plenty to discover.
Ready for Any Weather
Summertime in Ashland can be hot, but the heat is seldom unbearable. Pack light clothes, and maybe an umbrella in case you run into the occasional summer shower. Spring and fall are arguably the most comfortable seasons, with temperatures in the 60s and 70s. Fall brings some very colorful foliage to the Ashland area, so be ready to take photos. Ashland has warmer winters than many areas in the more mountainous parts of the state, but don't leave all your warm clothes at home. Sweaters and light jackets are good to have on the average winter day, when temperatures typically reach the 40s. Snow makes an occasional appearance, but doesn't usually stay long.
Keeping Busy
The Ashland Railroad Station and Visitor Center is a good place to start your tour of Ashland, and just might be the first place you see if you arrive by rail. The Visitors Center provides rich insight into Ashland's history, as well as a wealth of information on what's going on right now. Wet your whistle and take in some live music at Center of the Universe Brewing Company (11293 Air Park Rd., Ashland); see the latest exhibits at Gallery Flux; and learn about the area's Civil War-era past at North Anna Battlefield Park. Once night falls, you can head to the Keeble Observatory to take in one of its weekly public stargazing programs.
A Diverse Area
Ashland and Hanover County are considered part of the Greater Richmond area, with a diverse economy that leans heavily on education and healthcare. Several major companies—in industries ranging from pharmaceuticals to information technology services—have their headquarters in the region. Small businesses also thrive in Ashland, as you can see when you stroll down Main Street. You'll find the fruits of Hanover County's rich agricultural land on display at the weekly Ashland Farmers Market. Kings Dominion theme park—just 10 minutes from Ashland and well-worth a visit—is also one of the area's biggest employers.
Getting Around
Amtrak service is available to the Ashland Railroad Station, and you can enjoy the city’s scenery the best when you arrive than by train. If you'd rather fly, Richmond International Airport is about 30 minutes away, and provides a host of ground transportation options to get you to and from Ashland. And with Interstate 95 less than five minutes from downtown Ashland, you shouldn't have too much trouble driving there yourself if you prefer.
