Alexandria, Virginia’s steep history goes way back; the town remains a historical nugget with sites such as the Fort Ward Museum, Alexandria Black History Museum and Gadsby’s Tavern Museum
Local and state parks offer miles of horseback riding, hiking trails, kayaking and boating to keep you and your family active during the peak of the day. It’s kind of everything you could ever want, so make sure you consider these favorites for your itinerary.
Join the Hunt
Hunt through the streets of Old Town to discover historic sites and learn about George Washington and several other patriots by participating in an Old Town Alexandria History Scavenger Hunt. This self-guided, 45-minute adventure is guaranteed to be fun for not only children but adults as well. Map and clues are available at Union Street Christmas Attic.
Prescription for Fun
Check out the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum, the drugstore that served Robert E. Lee and Martha Washington. Nearly all of what you see in storage and on the shelves was what was left here when it closed up in 1933. In the upstairs area, you’ll find a storage room packed with wooden drawers full of leaves, roots, saps and herbs, which hasn’t been touch in almost 100 years. Traveler's tip: Only the museum's first floor is wheelchair accessible.
Walk on the Wild Side
Treat yourself to an afternoon at the Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve, where 485 acres of tidal marshes, swamp forests and floodplains beg to be explored. Follow the 3/4-mile Haul Trail through each of the preserve's habitats. Watch for playful beavers or muskrats, frogs hunting northern water snakes or turtles bathing on logs. For a more personal encounter, rent canoes or kayaks from the Belle Haven Marina. Time your cruise for dusk—it will put you on the water when brown bats and red foxes begin their nightly rounds.
Haute and Delicious
The Grounded Coffee Shop serves organic coffee, fruit smoothies and house-made treats. Gather round a table or plop yourselves in the comfy sofas to enjoy. Or refuel at the popular Haute Dogs & Fries restaurant onMontgomery Street. Choose any or all options from a smorgasbord of fresh toppings, offering traditional condiments like chopped onions, cheese or sauerkraut. If you’re feeling daring, experiment with mango-pineapple relish, spicy mayo or hoisin sauce. Can't decide? Ask the one of the owners for suggestions.
