Guide to Smith Mountain Lake

Experience the scenic beauty and thrilling adventures of Virginia's Smith Mountain Lake

Surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, this picture-perfect lake is more than just a pretty face. It was formed decades ago when the Blackwater and Roanoke rivers were dammed to create electricity. But the pristine lake also provides splash and sparkle to your central Virginia vacation. Whether you seek lakeside fun or an active getaway, you’ll find it all and more at Smith Mountain Lake.

Jewel of the Blue Ridge Mountains

As you and your family play in the mild waters of Smith Mountain Lake—a pleasant 75 degrees in summer—you may find it hard to believe that it wasn't always there. The twinkling lake seems to beckon you to swim in its clear water, water-ski its 40-mile length and picnic on its 500 miles of shoreline. Nicknamed "Jewel of the Blue Ridge Mountains," the lake is a popular playground for anyone who loves water sports.

Easy East Coast Destination

If you're anywhere in Virginia, you aren't far from lovely Smith Mountain Lake. Located halfway between the cities of Roanoke and Lynchburg, about 40 miles from each, the lake is only a two-hour drive from Raleigh and four hours from Washington, D.C. Small, friendly communities on the lake shores—including the town of Smith Mountain Lake—provide your necessities, including grocery stores, banks and dining options. But it's the lake itself—all 20,600 acres of it—that provides the fun.

Family Fun on the Water

You've never dived into cleaner water! Filtered by the native trees and plants on its shores, the lake's water is known for its purity. But that doesn't mean you can't play on it. Your family's water-sport choices are virtually unlimited. Try power boating, canoeing, kayaking or sailing. The lake has six free boat-launching sites. Fish for striped bass, crappies or bluegills. Looking for thrills? Try parasailing, jet skiing, water skiing or wake-boarding.

Off-Lake Activities

You may admire the lake's beauty as much from the shore as neck-deep in its blue water. When you feel the need to land-lubber it for awhile, more adventures await you. Venture into Smith Mountain Lake State Park on the north shore to enjoy 13 different hiking trails. Hit golf balls in any of the five golf courses around the lake, or enjoy the view as you tour the mountainous lakefront by car.
