Things to Do in St. George
Explore the wonders of St. George, a "little big town" in the southwestern corner of Utah where the Mojave Desert, the Colorado Plateau and the Great Basin converge
Witness millions of years of geologic history in the 10,000-foot peaks of Pine Valley Mountain to the low-lying Mojave Desert. Tee-off at some of the best golf courses in the region, or explore one of the many ghost towns, cactus gardens, historical pioneer buildings and more—the southwestern hub of Utah where St. George is beckons you to adventure.
Majesty and Wonder at Zion
Travel through the ages in a matter of minutes at Zion National Park, the oldest national park in Utah. Gaze up at the soaring massive cliffs of sandstone, high plateaus, sheer canyons, and monolithic cliffs, set against an azure sky. Explore the wonders here on foot. Hike glorious Angels Landing, about five miles round-trip, or the famous Watchman trail, about three miles. Pedal the Pa’rus trail on rented bikes to experience Zion's main canyon. Take lots of photos as you adventure, because nobody at home will believe the cinematic beauty of this park.
Dinosaurs in St. George
Journey into a real-life Jurassic Park at St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson Farm, one of the best dinosaur track sites in the world. It was discovered in 2000, when the landowner stumbled upon a three-dimensional dinosaur track. Thousands of others were found afterward in the sandstone and mudstone layers, which formed near an ancient lake 200 million years ago. Ogle the exceptionally well-preserved dinosaur tracks and rare dinosaur remains on view at the museum.
Local Mormon History
St. George's history intersects with the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in this country, and you can visit several fascinating sights and museums that impact both. When you explore St. George's historic district, you can't miss the shining white walls of St. George Utah Temple, striking against the red sandstone buttes. Explore the grounds and the visitor center, then head off to tour the nearby Brigham Young Winter Home. The guided tour gives background information about Young, church president for 30 years and founder of Salt Lake City.
Eating Right in the Mojave Desert
Take your clan out to a Hawaiian poke restaurant, just because the idea of such an eatery in Utah is so whimsical. Guests rave about the poke served by the Hawaiian Poke Bowl, claiming its blend of heat, spices and sweet is as good as it gets anywhere. If you're feeling more like pub food, check out George's Corner Restaurant, a bright eatery in a historic brick-and-wood building serving all-American grub like hamburgers, rib-eye steak and buttermilk fried chicken.
