It’s hard not to love St. George—it’s a small city and really gorgeous with the red-rock scenery.
It also makes for a great vacation as it’s easy to walk around and is inexpensive. Plus, your youngsters will love exploring the vast outdoor playground in and around this Utah town. There are so many wonderful things to do here. Come see for yourself!
It's Always Sunny in St. George
St. George averages around 300 days of sunshine yearly, making the region an ideal getaway destination for travelers seeking refuge from the cold. You’ll need sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat in the summer when temperatures soar past 100 degrees. Yearly average rainfall and snowfall combined is roughly 12 inches. A sweater or light jacket suffices for moderate winter days with highs in the 50s, but nighttime temperatures dip down into the low 30s.
Take it Outside
Trek through Red Navajo sandstone, towering cliffs, black lava rocks and volcanic cones at the 7,400-acre Snow Canyon State Park. After you get your fix hiking at this fine desert state park, take the kids to the St. George Children’s Museum for hands-on educational fun or the Dinosaur Discovery Park, where they can test their skills as dinosaur hunters.
The Business of History and Hikes
Because of its close proximity to the incredible canyon trails, including the Pine Creek Waterfall hike and the Canyon Overlook, and the colorful rock formations known as “hoodoos” at Bryce Canyon National Park, nature tourism is a major industry in St. George. Both parks are open year round. The region is fascinating to historians due to its significance in the westward movement of settlers and because of its connection to the early days of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, aka the Mormon church. St. George is also home to Dixie State University and the headquarters of SkyWest Airlines.
Park the Car
Interstate 15 intersects St. George, about 125 miles north of Las Vegas and 400 miles south of Salt Lake City. If you’re flying here, several airlines offer direct and connecting flights to the St. George Municipal Airport. Once you’re in the city, you can leave the car at the hotel and take public transit to over 140 stops. Purchase a day pass if you plan on making multiple trips. Buses typically run Monday through Saturday during regular business hours, but they don’t operate on Sunday or holidays.
