Things to Do in New York City

New York City will take your breath away

Whether it happens on the flight in, on a drive across one of the historic bridges leading into Manhattan, or while seeing Times Square for the first time, nothing can prepare you for the jaw-dropping spectacle of its skyscraper-laden view. New York City is surreal and it's easy to get around here thanks to an efficient public transportation system. No matter where you stay, it's a quick subway, bus or taxi ride to wherever you want to be in this city that truly never sleeps.

Get on a Boat

One of the best—and most affordable—introductions to the Big Apple is a boat tour around Manhattan. Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises has been giving tourists a view of the city via boat for decades. You'll see many famous sights on the 2.5-hour cruise, including close-up views of the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, the United Nations building and one-of-a-kind New York City skyline views from the water. If you don't want to spend money, take the free Staten Island Ferry from the tip of Manhattan across the harbor and back again for great views of Lady Liberty and the skyline.

Stroll Through a Famous Park

Exploring Central Park is a must if it's your first time in New York. The city's major green space is filled with scenery and activities year-round. Ice skate in the winter, take a row boat on the duck pond in warmer months, or take a stroll to bask in the colors of spring and fall. A different kind of outdoor experience awaits at the High Line. This linear park stretches for nearly 1.5 miles along a re-purposed elevated rail platform on Manhattan's west side. It offers a wide array of public art displays, food vendors and plenty of greenery along the narrow pathway.

Take in the View

You have three good options for seeing the city from on high—the Empire State Building, 30 Rockefeller Center or One World Trade Center. The latter is the newest skyscraper observation deck providing an immersive experience from the ground floor to the 102nd. The Empire State Building has two observatory levels on the 86th and 102nd floors. The higher one is much smaller and it costs a bit more to reach. At 30 Rock, Top of the Rock features three observation decks on the 67th, 69th and 70th levels, the latter an open-air platform atop the iconic building.

Eat Good and Cheap

Despite popular perceptions to the contrary, eating well in New York can be affordable. If you're on the go—and who in New York isn't?—food carts sell everything from typical American fare to ethnic specialties. A variety of street vendors can be found near all major business areas. The pastrami sandwiches at Katz's Delicatessen may seem expensive at first, but that's before you realize how big they are—one sandwich can easily feed two people. Another longstanding New York institution, Papaya King serves up healthy smoothies, as well less healthy frankfurters and smoked beef sausages.
