Guide to Central Park

If your idea of Central Park comes from a movie or TV show, you’re probably imagining a lush urban oasis where couples meet and are carried away to forevermore bliss in a horse-drawn carriage. But there’s more to do in Central Park than just fall in love. Explore all of its lakes, jogging trails, restaurants, reservoirs, ice rinks and special attractions (like its very own zoo and castle!) and find out how the iconic 843-acre New York City park offers something for everyone.

South End fun for all ages

If you don’t know what to do in Central Park, start out on the South End, located from Central Park South/Columbus Circle to 69th Street. Here you can rent a pair of ice skates and take a few leisurely laps around Wollman Rink. If you’d rather meet snow leopards, sea lions and bears, the Central Park Zoo is open 365 days a year and even offers an area where you can feed your new furry friends. Afterward, head over to the iconic Tavern on the Green (67th Street & Central Park West, New York) and enjoy the food, ambiance and history at this New York restaurant that’s known for its famous clientele.

Relax and unwind in Mid-Park

No Central Park Guide would be complete without a tour of some of Mid-Park’s most famous haunts. This area of the park runs from 69th Street to 90th Street and features the Great Lawn, a 55-acre grassy meadow where you can read a book, play Frisbee or just people watch. The Loeb Boathouse is a great place to rent a rowboat, ride in a Venetian gondola or spend an afternoon birdwatching. Complete your Mid-Park experience at Belvedere Castle and enjoy the view from Central Park’s highest point.

Savor history in Upper Park

The area known as Upper Park runs from 90th Street to Central Park North/110th St. and features The Blockhouse, the park’s oldest building that was built as a defense against the British in 1814. If remembering Camelot is more your style, go for a jog around the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir and enjoy a stunning view of the NYC skyline. Or, if you’d rather cool off, hit the Lasker Ice Rink and Pool to swim or skate, depending on the season.
