Know Before You Go: About McDonough
This magical little Georgia city is filled with fun
<
Relaxing and adventurous, McDonough is a hotspot for tourism. Southern charm, amazing food, gorgeous architecture, the famous Geranium Festival in May and opportunities for outdoor exploration are just a few reasons to visit McDonough.
Water Park Summers in McDonough
McDonough’s mild winters and balmy summers make the city a year-round vacation destination. Step into spring with temperatures that reach the 60s by early March. Highs increase about 10 degrees a month into May, bringing festivals such as Taste of Henry, which showcases local restaurants and food vendors, and the Geranium Festival to the city’s historic downtown. In summer, both temperatures and humidity can reach into the upper 80s, making it an ideal time to head to the High Falls Water Park 16 miles southeast or find a shady fishing spot along the McDonough Reservoir. Winter usually stays above freezing with daytime temperatures reaching the low 50s.
See the Sights
The first thing you'll likely notice when you arrive in McDonough is the Henry County Courthouse. It presides over downtown with its classic brick Romanesque architectural style topped with a gleaming white clock tower. You’ll find niche shops, restaurants and museums nearby. Two miles east, the 129-acre Heritage Park offers historic village buildings, war vehicles and realistic displays in the Heritage Park Military Museum. Let the kids romp off some energy at the Kidsville playground. At the Southern Belle Farm in the northeast part of the city, pick ripe berries, get lost in a corn maze or ride the cow train to tour the working farm.
A Consumer-Oriented City
Three busy retail districts anchor McDonough’s economy. Besides shopping at McDonough Square, you'll find national chains such as Kohl's, T.J. Maxx and Hobby Lobby at South Point. McDonough is closely tied to the economy of Henry County, where manufacturing is the number one industry. A drive around the county reveals plants for medical and plastics/rubber products, as well as many others. You’ll also find a flourishing health care system in McDonough with more than two dozen hospitals, diagnostic centers and medical support facilities in the immediate area.
