Guide to the Augusta Riverwalk
Whether you're in the mood to relax beside a tumbling waterfall, soak up some sun or shop at a popular farmer's market, you'll find the Augusta Riverwalk in Georgia an excellent place to spend time with family and friends
The linear park stretches from the Augusta Marina at the 5th Street Bridge to 10th Street, with opportunities for entertainment and relaxation that will appeal to all during your Georgia trip.
On Top of the Levee
Warm yourself in the sun's rays along the brick walkway on the upper level of the Riverwalk, or linger to gaze at views of the river and city from wayside observation points. Ramps and stairwells at 6th, 8th and 10th streets get you to the top where you'll find plenty to see. Check out a historic flag display waving in the breeze at 7th Street, or tell the time with your shadow at a sundial at 9th Street. At 10th Street, Heroes Overlook showcases bronze plaques dedicated to local heroes who received Medals of Honor in the armed forces and bricks with names of those who served.
Beside the Rolling River
Walk beneath shady trees as you explore the brick walkway along the river. Secretive niches, such as the Japanese Garden, let you breathe in sweet floral fragrance while escaping summer sun beside a cooling waterfall. Let the kids romp at the playground at Oglethorpe Park at 6th Street. The classic playground has teeter-totters, climbing equipment and a picnic area. Afterward, rent a canoe at the Augusta Riverfront Marina to get a unique view of the Riverfront from the water. Plan ahead to catch a concert at the Jessye Norman Amphitheater; this venue extends over the Savannah River, where you can enjoy live music while catching a breathtaking view of the water at sunset.
The Riverwalk Comes Alive
While the Riverwalk's serene park setting is ideal for strolling and picnicking, it is also alive with activity. At the weekly farmer's market each Saturday, pick up fresh fruits and veggies as well as unique souvenirs created by local artisans. Take a sunset stroll along the river on Sunday night and wind up at the Candlelight Jazz Concert Series at the 8th Street bulkhead. Annual festivals take place along the Riverwalk too, such as a St. Patrick's Day Celebration and Fourth of July RiverBlast.
Just off the Walkway
Visit the Morris Museum of Art at 10th Street to see more than 5,000 pieces created by artists from the American South. At 6th Street, take a walkway down to explore Augusta's original site at the Fort Augusta Memorial on the grounds of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the only remaining fort structure. If your stomach’s growling, listen to live jazz while you chow down on a Po' Boy or Murder Burger at the Cotton Patch (816 Cotton Lane, Augusta). Nibble on casual Southern fare at Boll Weevil Cafe & Sweetery (10 9th St., Augusta), and save room for dessert. The cafe is known for its scrumptious cakes, pies and cheesecakes.
