Best Restaurants in Augusta

Augusta's dining scene is steeped in a rich cultural heritage and contains a few pleasant surprises.

You might think Augusta is full of high-end places, since it's home to pro golf's most prestigious tournament, the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club, but, you can eat well and not break the budget at some of the highest-rated places in the Garden City. With more than 300 local restaurants to choose from, you'll have no trouble creating some culinary memories with your favorite people.

The Bee's Knees

In Augusta, even the hippest restaurants are affordable and accessible. Perhaps the best example of this is The Bee's Knees (211 10th St., Augusta), a tapas place serving international fare and Southern classics with a twist. It's also one of the most vegetarian and vegan-friendly restaurants in town, offering items like buffalo tempeh and tofu as an entree choice along with the usual meat and seafood selections. Kids have their own menu section, "For The Little Bees."

The Sweetest Place In Town

Want a slice of cake as big as your head for dessert? Head to the Boll Weevil Cafe and Sweetery (10 9th St., Augusta). Housed in a former cotton warehouse next to the Riverwalk downtown, Boll Weevil is locally famous for its cakes and other sweets, and also serves delectable lunch and dinner fare and Southern specialties like fried green tomatoes. But it's those desserts that have people talking and standing in line at the bakery counter. Even if you don't dine here, come get dessert to go. Chances are you'll be back before the end of your trip.

A Taste of the Big Easy

As you might guess from the name, the French Market Grille (425 Highland Ave., Augusta) serves up New Orleans-style Creole cuisine. It's a casual place with an extensive menu of po' boys, gumbo, salads and entrees. Strung with lights and filled with plants, it feels like you're dining on an outdoor patio even when you're indoors. The vibe is easy and breezy, with checkerboard tablecloths and plenty of hot sauce and sweet tea to go around. The restaurant is in Surrey Center, a boutique-shopping destination in suburban Augusta.

Sunday Brunch

For a taste of history along with your food, indulge in Augusta's best Sunday brunch at the Partridge Inn (2110 Walton Way, Augusta). Locals flock here for the buffet-style meal at the inn's restaurant, the P.I. Bar and Grill. Take advantage of the omelette station, where you can special order your egg creation and watch it being cooked right in front of you. Live jazz emanates from the lounge area, but request a table outside if the weather's nice. Nothing is more Southern than dining on the veranda of a 19th century, white-columned building, while ceiling fans twirl overhead.
