Burger Battle: 5 of the Best Burgers in Los Angeles

The City of Angels does a lot of things well, but its chefs are especially good at serving up sizzling patties that might just change your life

From fast food to food trucks and gourmet grilling, burger options in Los Angeles abound. It’s not just about the burger, but the full dining adventure. Sesame bun or a lettuce-wrapped patty? Fries or onion rings? Classic cheeseburger and ketchup or blue cheese and fig jam on an artisanal bun? No matter your tastes in this battle of the burgers, at least one of the below selections is for you. Before you start noshing on the best burgers in Los Angeles, be sure to take a picture because it’ll definitely last longer!

Go for the perfect pairing at Stout Burgers & Beer

For those who like to wash their burger down with a brewski, Stout suggests draft microbrew pairings for every burger on its menu. Order the popular Stout Burger (blue cheese, gruyere, rosemary bacon, caramelized onions, horseradish cream and roasted tomatoes—is your mouth watering yet?) and pair it with an IPA or barley wine and onion rings. Whether you’re shopping in the Valley, beaching it on the Westside or hiking to the Hollywood sign, there’s no excuse not to stop at Stout, site of one of the best burgers in Los Angeles, with locations in Hollywood, Studio City and Santa Monica.

No-frills burger window (plus a vegan option) at Burgerlords

This Chinatown and Highland Park walk-up burger window has traditional offerings like cheeseburgers and cheese fries, but vegans are in luck here, too. Burgerlords lands on the list of the best burgers in Los Angeles because it boasts a delicious vegan burger made with veggies, grains, spices and nuts that’s cooked fresh in-house daily. Another perk: Burgerlords now offers delivery and, ranging from $5.50 to $9.75, its burgers are budget-friendly.

L.A.’s best burger at Father’s Office

A gastropub in the Helms Bakery District, Father’s Office is known for its Office Burger—a sandwich that was, believe it or not, inspired by French onion soup. The burger is made with dry-aged beef and topped with caramelized onions, arugula, blue cheese, gruyere and bacon. One of the best burgers in Los Angeles (and maybe the country), the Office Burger is legendary with locals. Sang Yoon, chef and owner of Father’s Office, was named the true burger king by Esquire magazine. The restaurant has a great assortment of snacks and beer, and can be found in Culver City, Santa Monica and downtown.

On the move at In-N-Out

They say you haven’t fully experienced Los Angeles if you haven’t eaten at In-N-Out. Not only is it one of the best burgers in Los Angeles, it’s been called the best road trip burger and no wonder—get your order to go and it’s served in an open box that sits on your lap for an eating-while-riding experience that’s fresh, not messy and, most importantly, delicious. Order a Double-Double, Animal Style (trust us—among other things, it includes grilled onions, extra spread and a mustard-cooked patty) with fries (Animal Style fries are also a thing) and a Neapolitan shake and hit the road happy!

The humble burger at Everson Royce Bar

The Everson Royce Bar (ERB), a classy little downtown spot, has a back patio, an excellent wine selection, a short but amazing cocktail list and an excellent burger. Simple and understated, the single patty, one of the best burgers in Los Angeles, comes smothered in Tillamook cheddar cheese and served on an egg brioche bun. It is the American Dream as far as burgers go. The best part? The kitchen at ERB is open until 1 a.m. Monday through Saturday, so you can get a taste even late.
