6 Things To Do in Los Angeles That Aren’t Hollywood

There’s plenty to do and see here—beyond the lights of Tinseltown

Pack a picnic and settle in for a day at Echo Park Lake, a scenic escape in bustling Los Angeles

Los Angeles isn’t just glitz and glitter. In fact, it’s far from what many perceive it to be. Hollywood, which is really a small neighborhood in central L.A., is just a part of a city rich in culture, entertainment, food, wine, shopping and even sports. No matter the season, the weather in L.A. is perfect for outdoor activities and the plentiful beer and wine options, many of which are made locally, are a constant reminder that it’s 5 o’clock somewhere. Here are some of our top picks of what to see in Los Angeles—none of which requires primping or party attire.

Take a leisurely stroll through the Venice Canal Historic District

A stroll along the scenic streets of the Venice Canal Historic District? That’s amore.

Built in 1905 with the name Venice of America, this neighborhood, now known as the Venice Canals, has million-dollar homes and scenic waterways. This quiet community sits mere blocks from Venice Beach but feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of the boardwalk. It’s hard to resist a stroll through the area’s car-free streets and over bridges reminiscent of Italy at any time of day or evening.

Taste wine in Malibu

A day tasting wine is a day well spent. The oceanside Rosenthal Estate is open Wednesday through Sunday and has live music on its garden patio and food trucks in the parking lot on weekends. All Rosenthal grapes are grown in Malibu, and the winery also sells Surfrider wines sourced from various parts of California; a portion of proceeds of sales of the wine are donated to organizations that help preserve oceans, waterways and wildlife. Bottles range from $38 to $95, and tasting flights start at $12.

Hike to sweeping city views in Culver City

There are many options for outdoor exercise in hilly L.A. At the Culver City Stairs, an uneven staircase with more than 300 steps, you can get your cardio on while working your glutes and scoping the local flora and fauna. The payoff at the end of the climb is the breathtaking view of downtown and the Hollywood sign. The hike is fairly easy and perfect for beginners.

Diversify your taste buds downtown

With more than 30 vendors to choose from, your taste buds are in for a treat at Grand Central Market in downtown L.A. The Market, which is open every day from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., has been feeding locals since 1917 and offers an array of international cuisines, including—but certainly not limited to—Mexican, Mediterranean, Japanese and German foods. Another perk: You can book a free shuttle to or from the market as long as you’re heading to or from another downtown destination.

Boat or picnic at Echo Park Lake

Whether you’ve got a romantic adventure in mind or you just want to zone out for a couple hours, Echo Park Lake has you covered. The lake offers pedal boat rentals, canoe rides and gondola tours (canoes and gondolas should be booked in advance), and food and drinks can be snagged at nearby markets or restaurants. Don’t forget to pack a blanket! Pedal boat rentals are $5 per child and $10 per adult.

Catch a sunset baseball game at Dodger Stadium

Considered the crown jewel of baseball stadiums, Dodger Stadium offers VIP behind-the-scenes stadium and clubhouse tours

Between the months of April and November, baseball games—as well as other activities, like concerts and festivals—take place at Dodger Stadium. Worth visiting for the Dodger Dog alone (trust us, this isn’t your everyday hot dog), the stadium is the oldest Major League Baseball ballpark west of the Mississippi River, and the largest in the majors by seat capacity. Enjoy a cold beer and take in baseball history. Pro tip: Bring a sweater—temperatures tend to drop later in the day.
