Darwin

The tropical capital of the Northern Territory, Darwin is an unforgettable destination packed full of history, art, restaurants and incredible nature.

Darwin, Northern Territory

Take advantage of some of the seasonal and all-year attractions to browse markets, enjoy events, explore galleries - and even see a crocodile show. Of course, you can also simply relax by the shimmering Darwin Harbour with a delicious meal and drink.

Museums, markets and waterside dining

Darwin’s weather unfolds spectacular tropical skylines between November and April, and a gorgeously temperate ‘dry season’ between May and October. No matter the time of year, the main centre of town is a great mix of restaurants, bars, art and history that you can enjoy.

Get to know the region by exploring its fascinating history and culture at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. You’ll find superb Aboriginal art, as well as natural history displays and an exhibit on Cyclone Tracy. Step back in time at The Royal Flying Doctor Tourist Precinct at Stokes Hill Wharf, home to a virtual reality exhibit of the bombing of Darwin during World War II.

Looking for an unforgettable experience? Situated in the heart of the city, Crocosaurus Cove is the world’s largest Australian reptile display. Home to the renowned saltwater crocodile, as well as turles and whiprays, Crocosaurus Cove hosts nine interactive shows, from handler sessions to the daring cage dive with crocs.

For a breath of fresh air, the Botanic Gardens offer extensive shaded lawns and pathways between ornamental fountains and tropical orchards. Drop into the Visitor and Events Centre and learn about the Garden’s fascinating history and plant collections, including the African-Madagascan garden. The multimedia room displays images of the Gardens changing appearance from the wet to dry seasons.

The ‘dry season’ is a great time to picnic or lounge by the water. Roll out a picnic blanket on the grass at Cullen Bay and enjoy the views of the Arafura Sea. The Darwin Ski Club is another local institution, situated on the edge of the beautiful Fannie Bay. Relax here with a drink and dine alfresco as the sun casts a spectacular spell over the sea.

From April to November you can browse the Mindil Night Markets, where you’ll discover bustling activity that includes live music and street performers amongst stalls of delicious food and local arts and curios. Darwin is also home to some iconic beaches. Mindil and Vestey's beaches are Darwin's most popular, and surfers will find some great breaks at northern beaches Nightcliff and Casuarina.

How do I get to Darwin?

Between November and April you’ll find some great deals on flights and tours. Many international and domestic flight services operate in and out of Darwin International Airport.  Flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Cairns usually take around three to four hours.

If you’re interested in train travel, The Ghan might be for you. Since 2004 this train has been running twice weekly between Adelaide and Darwin. It takes two nights and covers nearly 3,000km.
