River activities and things to do
Once a thriving food trade route for paddle steamers, today the beautiful Murray River remains one of Albury’s shining attractions. Flowing between the twin towns of Albury and Wodonga, this historic stretch of water remains the perfect place to swim, kayak or paddleboard. Hire a canoe and explore the tranquil scenery. You can also cycle alongside the river on the beautiful Wagirra Trail.
Albury is also home to one of Australia’s most popular and innovative art galleries. Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA) contains a wealth of Australian and international art exhibits, as well as events, art classes and even food cooking demonstrations. You’ll also find kids' art and holiday activities. Located next to Dean Street’s restaurant precinct, this renowned museum is free to enjoy.
Parks and gardens
Since an English Elm was planted to open Albury’s Royal Botanic Gardens in 1877, the city has been known for its sumptuous gardens and exquisite greenery. Wander the meandering pathways of this treasured space and you’ll find colourful garden beds and shaded lawns where you can relax. Kids will also love the Children’s Garden, complete with life-sized dinosaurs, a troll cave and fairy temple.
Stretch the legs by following the 15km Wagirra Trail and Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk along the green banks of the Murray, to the Wonga Wetlands, a scenic haven of thriving birdlife. The sculptures along the way tell the Indigenous story of the Murray River and highlight the cultural significance of this historic water source.
Along the way you’ll also find Noreuil Park on the river’s edge. This beautiful foreshore park is a great spot to picnic and kayak. Located at the end of the Bungambrawatha Bike Trail, you can also enjoy a leisurely cycle through nearby surrounding parklands, including Heathwood Park, before joining back up to the Wagirra Trail.
