Guide to Seven Falls

In a state this spectacular, any attraction called "the grandest mile of scenery in Colorado" is bound to be jaw-dropping

You can see for yourself by standing at the base of Seven Falls and watching as the water from—you guessed it—seven waterfalls cascades down a drop of 181 feet. Then climb to the top of the falls and walk the tree-lined trails that feature sweeping views of nearby Colorado Springs. Escape the humdrum of the concrete jungle in favor of natural beauty when you visit the Seven Falls in Colorado.

Seven Falls: The Five W's

Your visit to Seven Falls starts at the Broadmoor resort, on the southwest edge of Colorado Springs; the falls area is owned by the resort. Park in the Broadmoor's east parking lot—it's free—and board a shuttle to make the 1-mile trip to your destination. This is the only way to reach the falls. Seven Falls is open year round, aside from winter, when it's closed Monday through Thursday. The hours fluctuate throughout the year, with the area closing around dark each night. The shuttle is wheelchair-accessible, as is the elevator that's built into the mountain and leads to a viewing area.

What to Expect

Seven Falls can be very crowded during summer, especially around dusk. The falls are lit up as darkness comes on, giving the area an ethereal glow. If you're just there to take in the scenery, an hour should be enough time to admire the falls, ride the elevator and browse the gift shop. If you plan to hike the two trails at the top of the stairs, give yourself at least one hour up there; there's only a little more than a mile of trail to trek, but it's a little challenging and you'll want to give yourself plenty of time to soak up the astounding views before climbing back down.

Extras and Add-ons

If you're a thrill-seeker willing to splurge on a once-in-a-lifetime experience, consider booking a Broadmoor Soaring Adventure. You have a choice between two courses, each consisting of five zip lines that take you soaring over the canyons and treetops. You can also book a four-hour excursion that includes both courses. Seven Falls also has its own dining option, Restaurant 1858. You can also enjoy a free experience, there's no charge to watch the American Indian dance troupe that performs at the falls during summer.

Before You Go

Visiting Seven Falls gives you a good excuse to skip the gym; making the steep 224-step climb to the trails a serious workout. If you have a fear of heights, or if you're nervous about your little ones climbing that high, you may want to stick to enjoying the views from below. Wear sturdy, slip-proof sneakers, and don't forget your camera. Leave everything else behind; no outside food or drinks are allowed. The area is sometimes closed due to weather, so if it's rainy or there's been recent flooding, call ahead before going.
