4 Easy Day Trips From Los Angeles
Trade in city gridlock for the open road and the great outdoors during these quick getaways—all less than three hours away
Named for the region’s trees, Joshua Tree National Park is characterized by its rock formations and desert landscapes.
Already seen everything there is to see in L.A.? Impossible! But if you’re looking to escape the bustle of the City of Angels for a time, these day trips from Los Angeles will renew your sense of wonder and reaffirm your love for the great state of California. Less touristy than L.A., nearby West Coast cities are just a quick road trip away (think up to three hours, tops) and are big on artisanal goods, hiking and more. Whether you’re looking for outdoor activities or a taste of wine country, we’ve got you covered. Throw your weekender in the trunk and go.
Get in touch with your wild side at Joshua Tree National Park
How many parks are cool enough to have a U2 record named after them? This wild landscape that inspired the Irish rock stars is also the spot where two deserts meet: the drier Mojave and the wetter Colorado. Inside Joshua Tree National Park (less than two-and-a-half hours from L.A.), stay up late to see the stars or wake up early to witness a sunrise that some would say is once-in-a-lifetime experience. If camping isn’t your thing, no big deal; visit the park during the day instead. Check out the Joshua Tree’s park map (provided at the entrance), wear sturdy shoes for comfort and look out for tortoises, coyotes and bighorn sheep. You can take pictures, but for your safety and theirs, always keep your distance. A seven-day pass is $25 if you enter by car, $12 if on foot.
Tour the Mediterranean without leaving central California
Explore where Ojai olive oil is made at California’s Ojai Olive Oil Co.
If you’re into wine, art and olive oil, you’ve come to the right place. Bordering Los Padres National Forest, the valley city of Ojai has it all, including a warm, Mediterranean climate perfect for harvesting grapes and growing olive trees. In Ventura County, just an hour and a half northwest of L.A., Ojai is a quick trip worth taking. Explore the town’s many galleries and museums, boutiques and ice cream shops. There’s also a Spanish mission you won’t want to miss. It’s easy to eat, drink and be merry here—Ojai Olive Oil Co. offers free olive oil tastings seven days a week, as well as guided tours Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. And you can take your pick of the town’s multiple wineries and wine tasting rooms.
Visit waterfront attractions at Balboa Island
A man-made island accessible by foot, bike, car or ferry, Newport Beach’s Balboa Island is fun for the whole family. Schedule a whale-watching tour, go fishing or take a stab at surf lessons. Catch your breath; there’s still more to do! Shop for trinkets, jewelry and beach-inspired pieces on Marine Avenue and try the island’s best desserts—the Balboa Bar and frozen banana have been famous for nearly a century. Last, but not least, visit the boardwalk and catch a sunset atop the Balboa Fun Zone’s Ferris wheel before heading back to La-La Land, just an hour drive after rush hour.
Explore the quirky mountain town of Idyllwild
For the best day hike and amazing views in Idyllwild, head to Suicide Rock Trail, a moderately trafficked 6.7-mile trail. Photo Credit: @peeaitcheye
Located in the San Jacinto Mountains, just over a two-hour drive from downtown Los Angeles, Idyllwild is an artsy mountain town elevated at 5,413 feet. The town is walkable and boasts an inclusive, tightknit community—the mayor is a golden retriever named Max! As for hiking, there are plenty of trails that range in difficulty, but two of the more popular are Tahquitz Peak (via South Ridge Trail) and Suicide Rock Trail. After working out, recharge at Idyllwild Bake Shop & Brew with beer, sandwiches and a freshly baked treat. Before heading back to the city, peruse local shops like Bubba’s Books, Mountain Mike’s Custom Leather and the Funky Bazaar, a curious but carefully curated antiques/thrift shop.
