Things to Do in Williams
Just a little west of Flagstaff, along Historic Route 66, is the charming city of Williams
With Wild West amusement, kitschy Route 66 memorabilia and a drive-through wildlife park, what’s not to love? So do your research, pack your bags and enjoy. Your family fun getaway to one of Arizona’s most beloved destinations is finally here!
Choo-Choo the Canyon
Why take a car when you can ride a train, especially one like the Grand Canyon Railway? It's an adventure within itself. This journey through history begins with a cowboy gunfight in true Western fashion on the train platform before boarding. Your family will love the two-hour trip across glorious high-desert terrain in the 1920s Harriman-style coach cars. Folk and country music accompanies you, courtesy of strolling musicians, until you depart at the Grand Canyon Village.
Bearly a Zoo
Bearizona's 160 acres are home to over 40 species; aside from the mountain goats, bears, bison, mountain lions and wolves that all roam the route, which is over three miles long. You remain in your car and drive through several different enclosures, some of which feature black bears, bighorn sheep and bison. Also found here are artic and tundra wolves, red fox and bobcats, just to name a few more. But don’t your worry, there’s also a kids’ play area. Additional zoo highlights include an animal care facility and a gift shop.
Cowboys and Clowns
If your family ends up liking the cowboy shootout at the train station, look for the same gunslingers, outlaws and sheriffs repeating the performance downtown along Historic Route 66 every summer night. This Wild West show is longer and funnier than the short train version, and often with a high school band as an opening act. The popular show moves to a different block every evening, so get a schedule at the Williams and Forest Service Visitor Center.
Dining on Route 66
Famous Route 66 runs right through downtown Williams and it’s a great place to look for grub. Try Kicks on Route 66 for delicious, healthy meals that emphasize locally grown produce. You can get anything from a Cesar salad to grilled burgers and steaks in a kid-friendly setting. Another great bet for good food at reasonable prices is the Red Raven, which serves both lunch and dinner. Locals not only recommend it, they go here when they eat out. Try the pepper steak or scampi shrimp, and make sure to save room for dessert.
