Hot Springs in Tucson

Dip your toe into one of southern Arizona's hot springs, and the rest of your body will want to get in on the experience

You'll find a wealth of relaxing soaking pools along the Gila River near the town of Safford, two hours east of Tucson. Some pools let you soak outdoors while surrounded by nature, and at others, you can combine your soak with a soothing massage or therapeutic wrap. If relaxation is what you seek, head to the desert and take a dip in the hot springs of Tucson.

You're Getting Warmer

You won't be able to swim in the only hot springs within the Tucson city limits, but Agua Caliente Park is still a fun place to visit. Once a tourist resort centered around the reputedly restorative waters of 87-degree springs, the park has a cool mesquite bosque and towering date palms that provide an oasis-in-the-desert feel to your gathering. Marvel at the turtles and ducks that dabble in the waters once enjoyed by tourists, and hike scenic trails, browse through an art gallery in the historic ranch house, and picnic overlooking the springs on the east end of the park.

Take a Walk in the Park

Soak your cares away in the hot springs of Roper Lake State Park, 110 miles northeast of the city. You'll find the rock-lined hot springs at the start of the Mariah Mesa Trail, a .75-mile nature loop. Head over to the lake and sunbathe on the sandy beach, or cast off for a refreshing swim. You can also toss a hook in the water from the park's fishing dock; you may find a rainbow trout, bass or catfish tugging on your line!

Head for the Sand Hills

Feel the hot Arizona sand between your toes—if you dare—at the Hot Well Dunes Recreational Area. You'll get to step out on a cool decking to descend into the 106-degree water in two concrete-lined soaking tubs. The old artesian well was discovered decades ago when oil drillers unexpectedly struck water at the site. Rent some ATVs in Tucson and tow them along to tackle the sand dunes in four-wheel drive. Bring plenty of water—there's no drinking water on site.

Treat Yourself to Luxury

Indulge yourself with hot soaks and rejuvenating services during your journey along the Safford Hot Springs Trail. Rent private soaking rooms by the hour at Essence of Tranquility, where you can soak with or without a swimsuit, or visit the communal clothing-required tub. While you're there, you can enjoy an essential oil massage in a private room. Soak in Roman-tiled tubs—cleaned after each use—at Kachina Mineral Springs. After your soak, soothe your soles with reflexology, relax your back with a massage or release toxins with a sweat wrap.
