Check out these popular Cheyenne attractions: Curt Gowdy State Park Wyoming State Museum Happy Jack Road Cheyenne Depot Plaza Nelson Museum of the West Historic Governors’ Mansion Wyoming is beautiful at any time of year, so head over to Curt Gowdy State Park for either hiking or trail-bicycling on an extensive network of trails around three separate reservoirs, or for a day spent fishing. One reservoir allows motorboats, one sailboats only and the third no boating at all. There are ranger talks and a plethora of events offered throughout the park and at the amphitheater at Hynds Lodge. You just spent a lot of time outdoors, so step inside the Wyoming State Museum for two floors of a true Wyoming experience—from the dinosaurs (there are several skeletons of dinosaurs unearthed in the state) through the frontier days and into the wild, wild west. There are some hands-on exhibits for children and a great deal about the natural and human history of the area. Tip: check out the gift shop, where you will find the best in Wyoming-oriented presents for everyone on your holiday list.
If you are driving to the Curt Gowdy State Park, then you are on Happy Jack Road, also known as Route 201, connecting Cheyenne with Laramie. The road takes you through Medicine Bow National Forest, which is actually a landscape of breathtaking rock formations, and you will see an impressive wind farm along the way as well. Check out the Bunk House Bar and Grill for burgers, a kids’ menu and live music on weekends. Back in Cheyenne, even those who are not railroad buffs will enjoy a visit to Cheyenne Depot and the surrounding plaza. The museum inside the working depot tells the story of the construction of the transcontinental railroad, and you can even work several railroad signal devices and hand-crank a replica of a steam engine’s drive wheels. The plaza outside is filled with statues—a horse, and four of Cheyenne’s big boot sculptures—and informational plaques about the Union Pacific Railway. You can also take a walking tour or a trolley tour: they both originate in the plaza.
If you have not yet had your fill of Cheyenne’s frontier days, then check out the Nelson Museum of the West, a three-floor private collection and extravaganza of memorabilia, including costumes won by Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, cavalry and weapons exhibits, taxidermy and Indian artifacts. Bring your mobile telephone: there is an audio tour available. And check out the Historic Governors’ Mansion, a Colonial Revival mansion where—yes—the governor and his or her family actually does reside. It is not all private, however: you can take a guided or self-guided tour, and watch a video about the house and the people who have lived in it.
