Richmond Vacation Tips for Budget-Friendly Fun

Find fun in the weirdest places

Richmond's history and culture isn't just about what's on the surface—there's a lot of unusual, hidden and free things to do! Explore the Edgar Allan Poe Museum, which celebrates the mystery author’s life and work with one of the largest collections of his letters, manuscripts, artifacts... and even his socks. See the final resting place of 18,000 Confederate soldiers, three US Presidents, a "vampire" and more at the Hollywood Cemetery. And finally, take a long walk through a beautiful city park with views of Richmond's skyline—and check out the creepy, hundred-year-old ruins scattered throughout when you visit Belle Isle.

    Looking for more unique attractions?

Check out the World's Largest Slinky and other wonders at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture, the Markel Building (inspired by a foil-wrapped potato and considered to be one of the 10 ulgiest buildings in the world), and the 29-ton, perfectly spherical Grand Kugel, "floating" outside the Science Museum of Virginia. They're all unique and very budget-friendly ways to experience Richmond.

Plan a movie night like no other

The Byrd Theatre, a National and State Historic Landmark, has been in operation since 1928. This 1,300-seat movie theater maintains its classical design and is full of history. While a movie back in the day would've cost you a whole 50-cents, a movie ticket today is just $1.99—one of the best deals in Richmond and real a bargain price even just to see the inside of the theater, never mind the feature film. Or, if live entertainment is more your thing, you can watch the reenactment of Patrick Henry’s “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death” speech at the Historic St. John’s Church.

Discover a feast for the eyes, and the stomach

Put on your best walking sneakers and head out to the South of James Farmers' Market. It's a Saturday morning favorite, overflowing with locally grown produce and artisan creations to scratch that shopping itch of yours. Or, head over to Cary Street and discover all the Carytown delights. Grab a homemade ice cream treat at Sweet 95 or Bev's, window shop all the unique stores and boutiques, and chill while you people-watch in adjacent Maymont and Byrd parks. Or, if your stomach is really feeling adventurous, take a Carytown Food Tour and discover some of Richmond's most unique taste-creations.
