7 Days of Galveston Pictures Though the Lens of a Local
Hi. I’m Marco Torres, a Houston-based freelance photographer and taco journalist. With a passion for outdoor adventure, Texas history and all things taco, I seize every opportunity to drive down to Galveston for an easy getaway. Join me, and I’ll guide you through the island’s hotspots.
Saturday: Unwind harborside at Pier 21 You’ll find Galveston’s best waterfront dining and entertainment around Pier 21. After the spectacular, vivid-orange sunset drapes the harbor in a warm celestial blanket, stroll over to Brews Brothers to catch a comedy show. While it is mostly famous for their burgers and craft beer selection, this dive also serves some of the best tacos on the island. The taco basket comes with four corn tortilla tacos (I recommend the pork belly tacos), homemade totopos (chips) and a specialty green salsa made with cucumber and pineapple.
7 Days of Galveston Pictures Though the Lens of a Local For many Houston natives, Galveston offers cool relief during hot summer months and a peaceful retreat during mild winters. As a kid, I remember loading up in our family van—packed with a cooler full of soda—and stopping for a bucket of chicken on our way to the beach. The quick, 50-mile journey down Interstate 45 leads to a Gulf Coast island filled with historic sites, family attractions and delicious food. Here are some Galveston pictures to show how I spend my week when I go these days. Photos courtesy of Marco Torres
Sunday: Take a stroll along the Galveston Seawall The iconic Galveston Seawall is a 10-mile-long barricade originally built to protect the island after the Great 1900 hurricane. You can’t miss the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier at 25th Street, aka the center of activity. This is Galveston’s version of the Coney Island amusement park or Chicago’s Navy Pier, complete with hotels, rides, games and attractions for the whole family to enjoy. I met up with a friend for an afternoon on our bikes, roller blades and her surfboard.
