Visitors flock to Philly to see essential American Revolutionary sites like the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. But that’s not all that Philadelphia has to offer. If you visit, be sure to explore its art museums, riverfront parks and beyond. Here's a short list of free things to do in the City of Brotherly Love.
History for the Taking
The Liberty Bell is an iconic symbol of American independence, and you can see it for free. The expansive, light-filled Liberty Bell Center is one of the most impressive Philadelphia attractions. Catch the free, open-air exhibit called President’s House: Freedom and Slavery in the Making of a New Nation right next to the Center. It explores the paradox of slavery at the executive mansion where George Washington lived. Then visit Independence Hall, the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution—it’s one of the best free things to do in Philadelphia. Tours of the Philadelphia Mint also won’t cost you a penny.
Art and Movies
The Rocky Statue and the steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art are among the city's most popular attractions. Don't miss a dash up the steps, pumping your fists like Rocky when you get to the top. The statue is just to the left. For more free art, sprint over to the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA). Yes, this is where Andy Warhol’s first-ever museum show provoked a sensation in 1965. The ICA gave first shows to many other innovative contemporary artists over the years. And you can explore its distinctive exhibitions for free.
Hang Out and Chill
Spruce Street Harbor Park is one of the most special spots in town. The "pop-up" park lures people in the summer by stringing 50 colorful hammocks for free lounging and people-watching. Facing the Delaware River, the park creates the ultimate hangout. You can get snacks from a boardwalk food vendor for a few bucks, but otherwise, enjoy this urban oasis without spending a dime. Hundreds of multi-colored LED lights twinkle from the treetops when the stars come out. Also, don’t miss Bartram's Garden—it's among the oldest botanical gardens in America with meadows, gardens and river access, as well as free paddleboat rentals on Saturdays.
Get Fit
If you're ready to try yoga, get ready to stretch during the free classes held outdoors each day at the Race Street Pier, or head over to the Philadelphia Art Museum on Wednesday nights. If you prefer golf, play a round for free at Sedgley Woods Disc Golf. It's open free to the public all year except during the Philly Open. Or how about a stunning walk/run/bike ride across a scenic boardwalk? The Schuylkill Banks Boardwalk is a 2,000-foot-long pathway extension to the Schuylkill River Trail. It runs from Locust to South Street and allows pedestrians, runners and cyclists to cross the river to access terrific skyline views.
