Fill up on free samples and scratch your shopping itch at the Portland Farmers Market. With locations all around the Portland area, its easy to enjoy all the local offerings. Not sure where to start? As the largest independently owned bookstore in the world, with over 1.5 million new and used books, Powell’s City of Books is an absolute budget-friendly, must-see when visiting Portland. Be sure to grab a map of the store before browsing (yes, it’s that big). And if history is your thing, make an appointment on the weekend to tour the rare book room.

Several Portland area museums are free to the public—including the Lewis & Clark College Hoffman Gallery, the Oregon College of Art & Craft Galleries, and the Oregon Center for the Photographic Arts. Most other museums also have complimentary admission hours, too. For example, the Portland Art Museum is free from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the fourth Friday of each month.
