Portland Vacation Tips From Our Experts

Stop and smell the roses

Portland's International Rose Test Garden is the perfect place to stroll through some of the best sites (and smells) the city has to offer. A walk through the garden, located in beautiful Washington Park, is free. Or, you can take the $5 guided tour—just be sure to book your tickets at least 2-weeks in advance!

Discover a place where even the trees have stories to tell

At the Hoyt Arboretum, you’ll enjoy a stroll through a virtual living laboratory—where over 2,300 species of plants, including endangered or threatened species, now thrive. Admission to the arboretum is free. You’ll just pay a small hourly fee for Washington Park parking nearby.

Get a taste of the local flavors

Fill up on free samples and scratch your shopping itch at the Portland Farmers Market. With locations all around the Portland area, its easy to enjoy all the local offerings. Not sure where to start? We recommend heading to the Portland State University market location, home to over 100 stands of local produce and goods, artisanal creations, local wine and brews, and so much more!

Spend a day (literally) surrounded by books

As the largest independently owned bookstore in the world, with over 1.5 million new and used books, Powell’s City of Books is an absolute budget-friendly, must-see when visiting Portland. Be sure to grab a map of the store before browsing (yes, it’s that big). And if history is your thing, make an appointment on the weekend to tour the rare book room.

Spend time without spending a dime at these museums

Several Portland area museums are free to the public—including the Lewis & Clark College Hoffman Gallery, the Oregon College of Art & Craft Galleries, and the Oregon Center for the Photographic Arts. Most other museums also have complimentary admission hours, too. For example, the Portland Art Museum is free from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the fourth Friday of each month.
