Stay with Choice Hotels in Corvallis, OR and enjoy this historic and beautiful city!
Joseph C. Avery settled a land claim in 1845 at the mouth of the Marys River where it flows into the Willamette River. He opened a store at the site in 1849 and surveyed a town site on his land claim, naming the community Marysville, most likely after the nearby mountain Mary’s Peak, which was named by French fur trappers in honor of the Virgin Mary. The legislative assembly of the town changed the name in 1853 to Corvallis, from the Latin phrase cor vallis, which means “heart of the valley.” Incorporated as a city in 1857, Corvallis briefly served as the capital of the Oregon Territory before Salem replaced it as the permanent seat of Oregon state government. It is the county seat of Benton County. This charming and attractive tree-lined city is the home of Oregon State University, historic buildings, numerous outdoor recreation areas and parks, wonderful wineries, and a beautiful downtown filled with great restaurants, lively taverns, art galleries, and unique boutiques and stores.
Known as a bicycle-friendly community, the city is overflowing with fun and interesting things to do. An abundance of performing arts, festivals and concerts entertain visitors throughout the year. Outdoor enthusiasts will be overjoyed at the number of options presented to them – the William L. Finley National Wildlife Refuge, Peavy Arboretum, Osborn Aquatic Center, Alsea Falls, Siuslaw National Forest, McDonald Research Forest, Chip Ross Natural Area, and Bald Hill Natural Area all offer fantastic hiking, biking, boating, river rafting, mountain biking, picnicking, and other recreational activities in beautiful and open nature. Some of Oregon’s finest wineries are located here in the heart of the Willamette Valley, and visitors will delight in spotting quaint covered bridges while traveling through the area.
