Start Your Day the Right Way With Some of Columbus' Best Coffee

There's nothing like a roaring shot of caffeine in the morning to get your day started on the right track

Columbus can help you do just that with its thriving coffee scene. In fact, Ohio's capital city has become such a java hot spot that it's home to the Columbus Coffee Trail, a string of more than a dozen heralded coffeehouses that take brewing very seriously. Spend your day sampling tasty concoctions on the trail, or visit some lesser known (but equally revered) Columbus coffee shops.

Cafe Brioso

Nestled in the heart of downtown Columbus, Cafe Brioso (14 E. Gay St., Columbus) buzzes with the sounds of chatty locals who pause only long enough to sip on strong cups of coffee or lattes topped with elaborate artwork. Lovers of all things local can happily top their drinks with regional honeys and syrups. Although you might visit for the coffee, you'll be hard pressed to resist the shop's homemade scones, cinnamon rolls and sandwiches.

Fox in the Snow Cafe

Tucked inside the remnants of a former garage, the Fox in the Snow Cafe (1031 N. 4th St., Columbus) is a rustic space adorned with steel framed windows, high rafted ceilings and polished concrete floors. It also offers a cozy outdoor patio. In addition to hand-poured coffees, this Italian Village-based coffeehouse serves up gourmet tarts, donuts and Danishes. You'll have plenty of time to savor your coffee and desserts here because there's one distraction the cafe doesn't offer—WiFi service of any kind.

Mission Coffee Co.

Another hip garage-turned coffeehouse, Mission Coffee Co. (11 Price Ave., Columbus) is located in Columbus' trendy Short North district. Choices aplenty await you here, including comfy couches, stand-up work desks, espresso bar seating and a sidewalk patio. In addition to serving its own line of coffees, Mission Coffee offers selections from popular roasting companies like Counter Culture and Heart Coffee Roasters. A staff of knowledgeable baristas will prepare your coffee to your liking, using methods ranging from woodneck drip pots to French presses.

One Line Coffee

Family-owned One Line Coffee (745 N. High St., Columbus) looks more like a chemistry lab than a coffee shop, with roasting and prepping gadgets prominently showcased throughout all areas of the original Short North location. Brewing is such a cherished art form here that the coffeehouse often hosts weekend workshops teaching techniques for different methods. Their coffee lineup changes almost weekly, but One Line Coffee strives to sell only sustainable and fair trade products. Don't leave before sampling their unique signature drink, the rich and aromatic honey latte.

Roosevelt Coffeehouse

The Roosevelt Coffeehouse (300 E. Long St., Columbus) proves that coffee doesn't have to just taste good—it can also be good for your soul. Based in downtown Columbus, this unusual coffeehouse is actually a non-profit business. The proceeds go toward fighting global issues such as human trafficking and world hunger every time you purchase a drink or pastry. Whether you settle into the laid-back interior with exposed brick walls or the tiny outdoor patio outfitted with picnic tables, you can relax knowing your purchase is helping others.

Stauf's Coffee Roasters

Experience the joys of coffee-making up close at Stauf's Coffee Roasters'(1277 Grandview Ave., Columbus) original Grandview location. Practically everything is on public display here from the barrels of beans to the roasters in action. Variety is the spice of life at this lively establishment where coffee selections from more than 20 different countries are on hand. In addition to coffee, the smell of fresh-baked pastries fills the air of this spacious coffeehouse filled with bustling patrons.
