Built by French settlers along Lake Champlain in 1755, the fort was the site of several significant military events. Originally called Fort Carillon, it first served as an access point to Canada and the Hudson River during the French and Indian War. In 1758, British forces attacked the fort and were defeated. They returned a year later and gained control of the fort, changing its name from Carillon to Ticonderoga. The British maintained control of the fort for more than a decade until a band of American Patriots, led by Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold, captured the fort in 1775, making it the site of the first American victory in the Revolutionary War. The fort was later recaptured by the British, who abandoned it after the defeat at Saratoga – destroying most of the structures prior to their withdrawal.
The fort was restored and turned into a museum in 1909. The museum site sits on 2,000 acres. There are daily activities, museum exhibits and costumed interpreters performing tasks soldiers performed in the 18th century. You can also walk along a hiking trail that travels around the Carillon Battlefield, rent a canoe to see the fort from Lake Champlain, or find your way through Fort Ticonderoga’s corn maze!
