Here's how to explore Brooklyn on a budget

Money-saving tips in Brooklyn

Hoof it to Manhattan.

You’ll quickly learn that NYC is where you walk. And walk. Since you’re going to visit the Big Apple anyway, why not walk across the Brooklyn Bridge? A summer stroll is always best, but the 1.1-mile trek is open all year long.

Bask in Brooklyn Bridge Park

Sitting in the shadow of the iconic bridge, this 85-acre park spans the waterfront through the Brooklyn Heights and Dumbo neighborhoods. Breathtaking views of Manhattan’s skyline blend with art installations, free movies and concerts, a playground, roller rink and more.

  • Take a moment to pay your respects at Fulton Ferry Landing, built in 1642.
  • Don’t forget to ride the refurbished 1922 Jane’s Carousel for just $2.

Got kids? Head directly to the Brooklyn Children’s Museum

Kids will love the interactive exhibits. Grownups might appreciate the fact that this Crown Heights institution is the first children’s museum in the U.S.—and maybe the world. It also features a multi-level underground gallery. Admission is $11, but free on Thursday afternoons.

Save first Saturdays for the Brooklyn Museum.

That’s when evenings are free at this world-renowned venue. Make sure you get the required free tickets for the evening’s entertainment when you pass the front desk. Trendy Saul restaurant is located here, too, but expensive. The Counter offers simpler fare from the same kitchen.

Catch a ballgame.

Since it might be too pricey to get tickets to see the many professional teams in the area, watching Brooklyn’s minor-league baseball team makes for a fun day at the ballpark. Tickets generally run $10 or less.

Shuttle to Shell Island.

From March to Labor Day, you can catch a shuttle for about $15 or less at the concession stand at St. Andrews State Park. Go shelling for the day on this uninhabited island, or swim and kayak among the dolphins. Snorkeling equipment and kayaks are available for rent.
