Home to Western New Mexico University, Silver City was once a mining town with infamous characters like Billy the Kid, Kit Carson and Butch Cassidy. The area now offers museums, cultural attractions, prehistoric artifacts and exciting outdoor activities. Silver City is a fantastic spot for your next vacation.
Silver City is a great place to learn about New Mexico history and enjoy its variety of attractions. The area of La Ciénega de San Vicente was formed after the American Civil War. The city of Silver City was later founded in 1870 after American prospectors came for a land rich with mining opportunities, specifically silver ore deposits. Pioneers inhabited this growing city and its crime rate soon skyrocketed. The inspiration behind many country westerns, Silver City went through a fair share of sheriffs, one of whom was notorious for arresting frontier outlaw, Billy the Kid in the late 1800s. Before the area was settled in by prospectors, the Mimbres Mogollan Indians lived in the area, as did the Apaches.
Aside from learning about the area, there are lots of things to do in Silver City. The Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, where you can walk through the remains of caves built by Mogollon Indians is worth the drive. After you’ve had your fill of sightseeing, take the opportunity to camp, hike or fish in the Gila area. If you want to stay close to home, head down to Historic Downtown Silver City, full of Old West charm. Find a mix of retail and gift shops, art galleries, antique stores, restaurants and the Big Ditch. The Big Ditch formed after a thunderstorm flooded the former main street, which has since been turned into a park and green break.
Less than 15 minutes from downtown is Historic Fort Bayard, a fort that protected settlers and miners during wartime. For a town full of historical sites under the New Mexico sun, head to Silver City. Hotels in this town that was once glistening with bricks of silver are a great way to enjoy a city still brimming with the historical aftermath of the mining industry.
