If you want to learn more about the area’s history, go back in time at the Frontier Gateway Museum. This museum has seven buildings that take you from prehistoric times to the present. The basement of the main building houses a recreation of Glendive’s Merrill West Street—complete with stores that could have been found in the city in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Outside of the main building, you’ll see a blacksmith shop, a fire hall, a log cabin, a restored school house, a covered sheep wagon and farm machinery.
Makoshika State Park is located one mile east of the city. It features more than 8,000 acres of primitive terrain with trails, picnic areas and even an archery range. While dinosaurs roamed the grounds years ago, today you’ll find wildlife like eagles, vultures, turkey and deer. You can start your park visit at the visitor center where you can enjoy spectacular views of the badlands and visit a museum that details the park’s history. As part of the museum exhibit, a triceratops skull and other fossils and artifacts are on display.
