Discover natural beauty with Choice Hotels in Bozeman, Montana. Named for one of the frontier explorers who blazed a new northern route off the Oregon Trail, Bozeman is a growing city that continues to attract new residents because of its beauty, its gentle quality of life and the variety of things to do in every season. You too will find yourself enchanted when you stay at one of the hotels in Bozeman listed below and explore its many attractions, which include: Museum of the Rockies, Gallatin Canyon, Gallatin River, Downtown Bozeman, Palisade Falls, American Computer Museum and the Montana Grizzly Encounter.
Your children are probably already begging you for a visit to the Museum of the Rockies, since it is famous for its extensive collection of dinosaur fossils. In fact, you will find more of them here than anywhere else in the world! The museum’s paleontologist was even the scientific advisor for the Jurassic Park movies. Continue on to the children’s discovery center, gaze out at the heavens in the planetarium, and find out about the history of Yellowstone Park on an “adventure exhibit” about America’s first tourism destination. Then discover some local history, both through the regional-history hall and then outdoors living-history farm, to round out your visit. For one of the most scenic drives you will ever take, get in your car and head out on Highway 191 through the Gallatin Canyon. You will find that the Gallatin River does indeed “run through it,” just as featured in the popular book and movie. The wildlife alone will amaze you: bison, bighorn sheep, black bears, coyotes, otters and eagles are all common sights, and the river itself is wild and wondrous. There are hiking trails to take and in the summer you can go whitewater rafting and kayaking on the river. The canyon and river are quintessential Montana and may be the part of this vacation your children will talk about for years to come.
One of the best things about Bozeman is its size: it's a city small enough for you to walk around and feel comfortable in, but large enough to offer options for dining, shopping and exploring. Downtown Bozeman is vibrant and alive, with special events being offered all year round, a “Music on Main” concert series in the summertime. The Gallatin Art Crossing adds one permanent piece of outdoor public art to the area every year, and there are galleries to explore in the downtown area as well. Take an afternoon and evening to spend downtown and you will not be disappointed. The next day, consider taking a drive up Hyalite Canyon Road: you will hear the Palisade Falls before you see them, the sound of water crashing continuously against rock filling the air around you. Right away you will see some rock columns; they are made of basalt, formed from a prehistoric lava flow. The trail up to the falls is paved and therefore handicapped-accessible; it is an easy climb for anyone. There is mist coming off the falls and it will make you feel cool on even the hottest day. Note that there are crevasses to explore beside the falls, but you may want to watch your children here because the footing is uneven. Want some indoor fun? Then head over to the American Computer Museum, the world's oldest continuously operating nonprofit museum dedicated to the history of the information age, robotics and social networking. Your children will get a sense of the human story behind computers and you may see a few of your electronic friends from the past—Apple IIe, anyone? There is more here than just computers: the museum is really dedicated to communication, displaying cuneiform writing, images of the Gutenberg press, telecommunication devices, robot toys, a printing press and even an old telephone exchange. Admission is free with donations encouraged. Your children will be particularly enthused about your next stop, the Montana Grizzly Encounter. Five bears make up this “family,” though they rotate through the viewing area two at a time. Watching the big animals play and interact together makes for a fascinating afternoon. The owner is knowledgeable and clearly loves his bears, and will tell wonderful stories of grizzlies as well as offer information about grizzly-bear safety and conservation. All of the bears were born in captivity—mostly living in inhumane conditions—and cannot be released into the wild, so not only is your visit entertaining, but the admission price goes to a good cause.
Whether you prefer to explore Bozeman’s indoor attractions or take a trip through the breathtaking natural surroundings around the city, you are sure to rate this one of your best vacation choices ever. Stay at one of the Bozeman, Montana hotels listed below for a front-row seat on everything there is to see and do.
