Things to Do in Stockbridge

Located just 20 miles south of Atlanta, the slower pace of life found in Stockbridge, Georgia can make you forget you're so close to a busy metropolis.

Primarily a residential community, Stockbridge offers quiet outdoor spaces and paved pathways through the pines, as well as a few fabulous attractions within city limits. Escape the hustle and bustle of the concrete jungle when you visit Stockbridge, and still have plenty to do.

Get Outdoors

Whether your favorite sport takes you out on the water, keeps you on land or puts you up in the treetops, you'll find a way to do it at Panola State Park. Rent a boat and paddle out on Alexander Lake to put a hook in the water, or just take in the beauty of the reflections of the pines on the water. Hike or bike 20 miles of paved trails, or while away the afternoon shooting targets at the archery range. The park also hosts tree-climbing events for all ability levels on a monthly basis. Take a walk on a 3-mile paved trail winding along Reeves Creek in Memorial Park.

Play a Round

Although the prestigious Eagle's Landing Country Club is only open to its private members, you'll find other places to hit a bucket of balls around Stockbridge. Head to Rum Creek Golf Course to enjoy a driving range and a nine-hole course hugging its namesake creek on the south end of the city. Watch out for the fourth hole—it's green lies between Rum Creek and a pond! If you prefer an 18-hole course, head 5 miles west to Jonesboro and book a tee time at the Lake Spivey Golf Club. The challenging championship course is open to both members and the public.

Head for the Beach

If you overhear the locals talking about heading to the Beach, they're probably not referring to a seaside strip of sand more than 200 miles away. Relax on soft white sand at The Beach at International Park, 25 miles southwest of town, where you can also zip down water slides, bounce on a water trampoline and let the kids burn off energy at an indoor playground. For more water park fun, head to Hurricane Harbor at Six Flags Over Georgia, 30 miles northwest in Atlanta, where you'll also find roller coasters and other amusements. Closer to town, Browns Mill Aquatic Center has twisty slides and geysers just 10 miles northeast of Stockbridge.

Eat Up

Savor your favorite Southern dishes at Bridgeview Country Cooking (4727 Henry Blvd., Stockbridge). The restaurant serves up breakfast, lunch and dinner. Start with fried green tomatoes or fried pickles to make way for Southern fried chicken, chicken fried steak or other comfort food favorites. You'll find lip-lickin' barbecue in just about any form imaginable at BBQ Masters (5627 N. Henry Blvd., Stockbridge). In addition to the usual brisket, pork and chicken, BBQ Masters offers barbecued turkey, ribs and sausage. The restaurant also serves up soul food specials daily, including meatloaf and cube steak accompanied by collard greens, candied yams, creamed corn and other tempting sides.
