Lessons From A Local: Antique Shopping In Dania Beach
Spend an afternoon finding unique gifts in the shops along this Florida town’s Antique Row
A drive down US-1, also known as North Federal Highway, near Dania Beach Boulevard unveils a collection of charming antique shops and art galleries in a quaint downtown Dania Beach setting known as Antique Row. Quirky household items, from glassware and silver to antique furniture and chandeliers, line the shelves and walls of these popular shops. One shop owner shared with us how to make the most of your trip.
“I have always had a passion for past and present items that are well worn with time,” says Ada Byalick, owner of Vintage Market & Salvage Company. “I love the history of my pieces.”
Her shop specializes in farmhouse and shabby-chic styles and contains hundreds of items from Europe and the United States. Ornamental trays, vintage doorknobs, pitchers, glass bottles, candlesticks, pillows and more fill the shop. Many of the items are handmade. Small items, like soaps and some jewelry, start as low as $1.50 and are big hits with her visitors who are looking for something small but meaningful to bring home.
“I love that I own my own business, and I love helping people,” she says, adding that her shop also offers home decor and design consultations for those wanting to decorate with antiques or update their home’s style to a farmhouse feel.
Looking to spend the day discovering treasures along Antique Row? Your best bet is to do so between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., since many of the area’s shop owners close up early or open late.
“Most are retirees, so come between those hours for the best experience,” Byalick says.
Here are four more tips to keep in mind before you shop Antique Row.
Dress for the weather
Many of the shops are housed in historic buildings without quality insulation—meaning cool air escapes and the shops get warm. You’ll also get in a lot of steps walking between shops, so dress coolly and comfortably.
Take a bathroom break before shopping
Public restrooms are scarce in the shops, so plan to take a bathroom break before you start shopping.
Leave Fido at home
Only service animals are allowed along Antique Row.
Plan around mealtime
Most shop owners do not allow food or beverages inside the shops due to the collectible and rare nature of some items (vintage linens with a side of Diet Coke is not a good look). Eat before you go or check out one of the dining options nearby. The family owned Grampa’s Bakery & Restaurant, a favorite among locals since it opened in 1957, is famous for its home-style cooking and fresh-baked breads and pastries. Swing by for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
While you shop, say hello to Byalick at Vintage Market & Salvage Company, open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at 17 N. Federal Highway. Other shops of note include Akiba Antiques, Candlelite Antiques Shoppe (you may recognize this one from Antiques Roadshow on PBS and History Channel’s American Pickers) and Antiques Supermarket (if you run out of time, you can peruse their eBay store when you get back home!).
