A Quick Guide to TSA PreCheck and Global Entry

Say goodbye to long security lines—your stress-free airport experience awaits

Looking to bypass endless airport security lines? The US government offers options.

The beginning of a relaxing getaway is often anything but serene, considering the time-consuming lines at airport security, the headache of removing your shoes, jackets and belts and the irritating process of unpacking your laptop and liquids from your neatly packed carry-on.

Fortunately, there are a couple of options for travelers looking to bypass the wait and the hassle. TSA PreCheck and Global Entry programs both offer expedited security screening at more than 200 US airports.

So what’s the difference between TSA PreCheck and Global Entry, and which one is worth your investment? It depends on what type of travel you typically do.

TSA PreCheck

TSA PreCheck is ideal for domestic travelers looking for a ticket into the shorter security lines. Here’s how to enroll:

  • Head over to tsa.gov and fill out an easy form.
  • Attend a short in-person appointment at one of more than 380 enrollment centers (including airport locations) throughout the country.
  • Pay $85 for a 5-year membership.
  • You'll receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN) to include with your airline reservation when you book your flight. The TSA PreCheck designation will appear on your boarding pass.

International travelers can benefit from expedited customs processing through Global Entry.

Global Entry

Global Entry is designed for the international traveler. With this designation, you get two benefits for the price of one. Global Entry offers expedited customs processing at more than 50 US airports to speed your entry back into the country after an international flight, as well as TSA Precheck on outbound international flights and domestic flights on participating airlines.

Here’s how to sign up:

  • Go to cbp.gov and fill out an application.
  • Complete an in-person interview.
  • Pay $100 for a 5-year membership.
  • Once you are enrolled in Global Entry, you’ll receive a PASS ID number on the back of your Global Entry card. Remember to include this number when booking your airline reservation.
