Things to Do in Cheyenne

If you’re planning a trip to Cheyenne, bring the entire family along!

This Wyoming town comprises of sites and activities to keep any cowgirl or cowboy happy. You will love learning about the town’s woolly and wild frontier past at Cheyenne’s museums and historical societies. Commune with nature in the city’s supreme scenery or check out the historic downtown area by trolley. Or better yet, come in late July, when the Cheyenne Frontier Days holds their annual rodeo championship amidst a festival atmosphere with free pancake breakfasts and music.

Saddle Up

Mosey into the Terry Bison Ranch and hop aboard a trolley for a ride through a herd of bison. TBR trains—six different classic locomotives—run on standard gauge rails. Every day, with the exception of Christmas, you can explore the Old West on horseback by the hour or the day. If you can mount and dismount a horse—and you're at least 8 years old—pick your steed for a private or group trail ride. Shorter cowpokes get their own 15-minute pony rides in the kid corral area.

Frontier Days Festival

Every summer, Cheyenne Frontier Days provides more than a week of fun! Take in some calf roping and bull-riding at the rodeo, see live country music performances from the likes of Kid Rock and Brad Paisley, get your adrenaline pumping on the carnival rides and pig out at the Oasis food vendors.

Take the Trolley

One of the best ways to explore the town is on the Cheyenne Street Railway Trolley. Established in 1887, the trolley system once served as Cheyenne’s main form of public transportation and today offers 90-minute narrated tours of the town’s sights from May through September with special tours in the off-season. You can hop on and off during the excursion. Your older children might enjoy the yearly Halloween Ghost Tour that explores the ghostlier spots in the region, and the entire family can see the holiday displays on the yearly winter Christmas lights extravaganza.

Chow Down

Long before you wake up, the Bread Basket Bakery & Sandwich Shoppe (1819 Maxwell Ave., Cheyenne) is firing up the ovens for freshly baked breads, pies, cakes, cookies and pastries. Choose a soup, salad or sandwich combo—it comes with a cookie—and get a half-sandwich and soup for the kids. The family-owned Albany Restaurant, Bar & Liquormart (1506 Capitol Ave., Cheyenne) serves steaks, burgers and burritos. This restaurant also has a special children’s menu, and fruit pies for lunch and dinner. If you're not in the mood for barbecue, Rubyjuice Fruit & Smoothies (113 E. 17th St., Cheyenne) makes smoothies, wraps, salads and soups for breakfast, lunch and late lunch.
