Soaring above the rest of the city, the 605-foot Space Needle is an iconic fixture of the Seattle skyline, offering amazing views of the Puget Sound, Mount Rainier and more from its observation deck and rotating restaurant. Climb aboard the historical monorail—a remnant from the 1962 World's Fair—that whisks you away from the city center straight to the needle. Then, enter the tantalizing world of Pike Place Market, a sprawling marketplace that stimulates all the senses. Stroll the vibrant waterfront, admire the views of the Olympic Range from the top of the enormous Ferris wheel and take a ferry to Bremerton for oysters.

Then dive deeper—through the tunnels under the streets of Seattle—on the wonderfully entertaining Underground Tour, where you’ll get the chance to listen to stories about pioneer life. Get an outdoor history lesson by strolling through the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park and leave time for lunch in Chinatown.

Not even the rainy weather could cool down Seattle's food scene. With fresh seafood just a net away and a wonderfully diverse population—it's the diners who reap the rewards. One to try—if you don't mind the perpetual line out front—is Salumi Artisan Cured Meats, offering delightful sandwiches of fine Tuscan Finocchiona salami and cheese, as well as soups and salads at reasonable prices. No trip to the city is complete without a cup of some of the nation's best coffee. While best known for creating the Starbucks dynasty, Seattle is also home to numerous independent roasters and cafes. Stop by Slate Coffee Bar, located in the Ballard neighborhood, and sample a fresh cup from this local roaster and relative newcomer to the coffee scene.
