Know Before You Go: About Wytheville

Wytheville, Virginia is the town to visit if you have a love of the land, interest in culture, thirst for Civil Rights history and a penchant for Bluegrass music

You’ll be surprised by the numerous activities within the town's 14 square miles and neighboring communities—all set against the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and surrounded by the breathtaking scenery of the Appalachians.

Up, Down and All Around

Visit the African American Heritage Museum, a former school-turned-museum that showcases the vital role of the now-shuttered Wytheville Training School that once played a role in educating local African American students. Also stop by the birthplace of Edith Bolling Wilson who was the wife of President Woodrow Wilson, the Haller-Gibboney Rock House and the Great Lakes to Florida Highway Museum.

Head to the Big Walker Lookout for some of the most spectacular views of the Appalachian Mountains at an elevation of 3,405 feet. If you want a scenic spot for family picnics and hiking trails for all levels, go to Crystal Springs Recreation Area that spans 1,800 acres. If you’re a music lover, you make plans for the outdoor summer concert series at Withers Park, opt for a musical production at the German-themed Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre or head over to Gerta's House of Music to hear the best of bluegrass and local talent.

Warm Summers and Chilly Winters

While packing for your Wytheville trip, expect moderate year-round weather that ranges from warm, humid summers to chilly yet pleasant winters. Keep in mind that it’s all about elevation here. Prepare for temperatures to drop at higher elevations, especially in the winter, and expect a few bad hair days during humid summers. Summer temperatures tend to stay in the high 70s to low 80s, while July is the hottest month and pushes temperatures into the highs 80s. Thankfully, nights are usually pleasant as temperatures drop. You'll most likely need your umbrella in May, when more than 4 inches of rain typically falls. Winters in Wytheville are mild, with January highs in the low 40s. You probably won't build a snowman here, but be on the alert for ice storms.

Tourism, retail and manufacturing are the heart of Wytheville's economy. Check out the town's tree-lined Main Street for a classic American downtown shopping experience that also offers ample stomping grounds for antique hounds. Live music venues, four museums, the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests and Appalachian National Scenic Trail pack the tourism sector with recreational opportunities the entire family can enjoy.
