Things to Do in Fredericksburg
The centuries-old history of Fredericksburg, MD is a fascinating place for you and your family to explore
Home of George Washington's kin, a hot spot of Revolutionary War fervor and a site of major Civil War conflict, Fredericksburg has borne witness to some of America’s most important historical events. This will become quite apparent to you as you tour Frederick’s impressive 40-square-block Historic District, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Not all of Fredericksburg is about the past, however—it is also home to the University of Mary Washington, which abounds with youth, advancement and vitality. Your family will love the eclectic mix of culture to be found in Fredericksburg.
Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park
The Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park might be America's bloodiest landscape—it is here where the Civil War exploded into its devastating climax. The Confederate and Union armies clashed in four major battles here, leaving 15,000 killed, 85,000 wounded and streams of refugees pouring into the countryside. You can pick up a map and an informative brochure and watch an educational introductory film at the visitor center before you head out to explore the major battlefields either in your car or on foot.
Kenmore Plantation and Gardens
Step back in time at the pre-Revolutionary Kenmore Plantation, an elegant, Georgian-style brick mansion that was the home of George Washington's sister, Betty Washington Lewis, and her husband, Fielding Lewis. Guided tours of the mansion are available, and the 3 acres of lovely grounds and gardens are open for you to explore on your own. In addition, antique aficionados will be most appreciative of the 18th-century furniture and decorative arts in the Crowninshield Museum (just to the left of the front gate).
LibertyTown Arts Workshop
Located in what was once the plumbing workshop of Old Town Fredericksburg, the LibertyTown Arts Workshop is Fredericksburg’s largest art center! The bright walls, large windows and abundant art will immediately lift your spirits and inspire you as you enter the center. Some 50 artists share workshops here—look for their newest works in the main gallery—and many offer classes in such mediums as pottery, watercolors and stained glass.
Gelato or Old-Fashioned Soft Cones
Your hunger doesn’t have to last long in Fredericksburg! You can savor authentic Italian food at Basilico Deli (2577 Cowan Blvd., Fredericksburg), where patrons order deli-style, are served huge portions, and enjoy great service. Try the Italian sub, rosemary potatoes, and tasty gelato.
But if instead of gelato, you’re craving some old-fashioned, soft-serve ice cream, make your way to Carl's (2200 Princess Anne St., Fredericksburg), which is a Fredericksburg icon. At Carl’s, you can also get malts, shakes and floats—mmmmm!
