Things to Do in Texarkana
Texarkana in Texas is a border town—literally.
Addresses on the western end of State Line Avenue are physically in Texas, while those on the eastern side are in Arkansas. Check out the downtown U.S. Post Office, where the state line marker goes right through the lobby. You can explore local history at one of the town’s four museums, buy fresh produce and handcrafted souvenirs at the local farmers’ market, and catch some thrills by taking the Texarkana Ghost Walk.
The Farmers’ Market—Salsa, Crafts and Stories
If you're in town between early spring and fall, head for the Texarkana Farmers’ Market downtown. Each Tuesday and Saturday, you'll find fresh produce, baked goods, eggs, meats and handmade crafts. Special events include salsa tastings, watermelon contests, wine tastings, and Kids' Day, when employees of the local library read stories to the little ones. A kids' section stocked with books, toys and coloring books is set up on most market days. When you visit the Texarkana Farmers’ Market, you can not only get a slice of fresh-baked pie with delicious flavor, you’ll get a slice of real Americana and local flavor!
Explore a Museum or Two
Four museums make up the Texarkana Museums System. The Museum of Regional History is the oldest of the four and is housed in the vintage Offenhauser Insurance Building. With the giant pink wall above its entryway, you can’t miss spotting Discovery Place—Texarkana’s museum for kids. Once inside, your kids will enjoy looking at the prehistoric animal mural and playing with such interactive exhibits as a 1920s kitchen and a 1920s general store.
Card players, in particular, will enjoy touring the 1885 Italianate Ace of Clubs House—the house was designed in the shape of a club! And if you call ahead, you can book a tour of the Patrick J. Ahearn House, another Victorian house dating back to the early 1900s.
Looking for Ghosts—Texarkana Ghost Walk
In a town filled with vintage buildings, it's not surprising that there might be a few ghosts about! On most Saturday nights, the Haunted Texarkana Ghost Walk leaves from the Lindsey Railroad Museum and wanders through the city streets. Some of the specters you might encounter include children laughing at the Bowie County Health Clinic, a headless woman on the train platform at Union Station, and an array of disembodied voices at the Rosehill Cemetery. The tours start at 9 p.m., guaranteeing that you'll be wandering through town in the dead of night—no pun intended!
Texas Barbecue and Southern Home Cooking
The tricked-out food truck that houses Naaman's Championship BBQ (5309 North State Line Ave., Texarkana) is a local landmark. Its specialties of Texas barbecue and such homemade desserts as German chocolate cheesecake have given this hotspot the reputation as the best barbecue spot in the city Naaman’s address is permanent, but they also travel to participate in special events. You can follow them on Facebook and Twitter for changes in location and hours.
